Description

Box with many small compartments for storing things.

Completely parametric, number and size of compartments as well as the wall thicknesses can be configured in the SCAD file.

Friction fit top with configurable tolerance for achieving suitable fit.

Last but not least, the top has matching grooves for the walls of the bottom part to prevent even the smallest parts migrating between the compartments.

Instructions

The accompanying STL file only contains a 2x2 example box with 20x20x20 mm compartments. On my setup both the outer and inner walls are two printer tracks wide with no infill. The 0.4mm fit tolerance required just a bit of cleaning of the corners and the top grooves to produce a box which operates fairly nicely and stays securely shut.

It is recommended to edit the SCAD file to produce the box parts in desired dimensions or use it as a library. It is also recommended to customize the wall thicknesses by picking values which the printer in question produces nicely.

Development ideas for future:

  • Rounded corners, including the internal corners of the compartments to help when digging out small parts.
  • Hinges and a closing mechanism
  • Some sort of stacking scheme
  • Handle for the bottom part so that you can use smaller bottom parts as drawers in a larger bottom part to make a mini-cupboard for stuff
  • Some way to conveniently omit some of the internal walls to get a box with both small and big compartments

I tried to download the scad file to customize the settings and the entire customize panel is blank. No ability to change anything. Maybe it's on my end, but I've used scad in the past with no issues.
