After weeks of dedication, countless sleepless nights, and numerous iterations, we are thrilled to launch one of our favorite designs - to our knowledge, this is the WORLD’S FIRST fully 3D-printed multi-color Scanimation Clock!

Scanimation, also known as barrier-grid or picket-fence animation, brings static images to life through a clever interplay of vertical lines and motion. By integrating this fascinating optical illusion into a functional timepiece, we’ve created a design that’s both mesmerizing and practical.

Instructions

Please read the instructions below carefully before starting.

The components are divided into three printing profiles to optimize print quality and speed. Here’s the exploded view of the clock illustrating each component referenced below.

Profile 1 - Second Hand Wheel + Top Bar + Spacer

Two Versions of the second hand top bar and spacer for Clock Component Kit 011 variations:

Plate 1 matches the Clock Component Kit 011 version we received, which measured 32.3mm between the top of the second hand mount point and the back of the case.
Plate 2 has the top bar and spacer for the variation matching Bambu Lab published 3D model, which has a shorter axis.

Lightweight Parts: The second hand must be printed lightweight to ensure the quartz movement can turn it. These parts are extremely delicate—handle with care during removal to avoid warping.

Tip for removal: Insert a sheet of paper between the parts and the printer bed to loosen them gently before lifting.

Profile 2 - Clock Holder + Hour & Minute Hands

The modular clock holder can be used in 3 different ways: hang with a nail, hang with a strap, or pair with our Modular Clock Stand (download separately) to transform the clock into a desk clock. The holder can fit a clock component up to 57.8 x 57.8mm.

How to adjust clearance for the hands to fit better?

Everyone’s printer / filaments / setup is a bit different, so the extra clearance set in the model might not work for you when printing clock hands where it requires higher precision. If you run into issue to make the hands fit please try to adjust the following settings:

Elephant foot
- Increase it to up to 0.5mm to get rid of an elephant foot
X-Y hole compensation:
- Hole is too big
  - Set a negative values to make the hole smaller
  - Change the value in 0.1mm steps
- Hole is too small
  - Set a positive values to make it bigger
  - Change the value in 0.1mm steps

Profile 3 - Cat Play Animation Clock Face

You will need AMS to print the clock face in multi colors. The clock face is printed face-down for best results. Ensure your print bed is very clean before printing.

How to achieve the best animated effect?

Choose high contrast colors: Ensure adjacent areas have strong contrast (e.g., a white cat with blue eyes on a red background). Low-contrast combinations may result in less visible animation.
Pick the right profile:
1. For a light-colored cat with a dark background, use the white cat profile.
2. For a dark-colored cat with a light background, use the black cat profile.
Use a white clock base: PLA White can be slightly translucent. Using a non-white base may reduce the clarity of the colors on top.
