Molymod-Compatible Bond: Standard Medium Link

A “single bond” link for a molecular model kit! Whether you want a bond in a specific colour, just need a few more than what your set include, or if the real Molymods are too pricey for you, here you go I guess.

This is Molymod-compatible and works with both genuine Molymod and my Molymod-compatible atoms. The distance between two atoms when joined with this link is 19.2 mm (the same as the Molymod equivalent).

Some uses for these bonds include covalent single/sigma bonds, ionic bonds for a crystal lattice, or for any other reason you want to link two atoms together.

I used 3 walls and 25% gyroid infill, 0.16 mm layer height, and snug normal supports. The increased initial layer expansion (the base of the supports) is necessary due to the small footprint of the part, to prevent it from lifting or being dislodged during printing. 0.16 mm layer height is required for a smoother surface so it does not catch onto the inside of the atom holes as much.

When using a bond or atom for the first time: Insert the bond with a twisting motion to flatten any small imperfections. It may feel quite tight and difficult to use at the start, this is necessary as using them a few times will smooth them out causing a looser fit. Sidecutters/those little snips are really useful for removing any nubs of support material leftover. Attaching and removing bonds will become much smoother after doing this just a few times.

Note on tolerances: The tolerances on these are not perfect, and neither are the genuine Molymod ones. Because of the tiny variances in size between the atom holes and the bonds, some bonds may be too loose or too tight. If it doesn't fit, I recommend trying the other end of the bond and if that doesn't fit, just try a different one. I've made countless test prints to ensure that this bond works with both my atoms and real Molymods and to ensure a fit that lasts many uses, hence why this took so long - please let me know in the comments if you have significant issues with the tolerances or if you have any feedback!
