Description

Basic info:

Toroidal propeller launcher with double planetary gearbox.
Update: Part 13-256.stl - extended stick for bed 256x256mm (A1/P1/X1).

Gearbox:

Non-printable parts: You just need one type of screws (M3x16 Countersunk screw, DIN 7991) for assembly.
Gear ratio 1:12 with smooth move.

Printing:

No supports!
Layers height are 0,12-0,2mm.
Recommended material for gears is PETG, see below to BOM.

Printed well. This thing has a lot of power and was surprising when I first used it. I greased the gears with engine assembly lube and they worked great.

Do you think it would be possible to design some flying parts that are smaller? If these could be printed 4 at a time on the build plate it would be incredible. With them taking 40 minutes each it sucks when you lose one. I am going to try and experiment with making them smaller and seeing what they do. Just gonna be hard to still have the middle be the right size.

really neat! be sure you get the flush screws and not the standard fastener head from Home Depot/Lowes.

not to my knowledge but it shouldn't be too hard to accommodate this change in your own print by removing the flush screw feature and just extrude straight down.

or just heat the head of the screw with a lighter and it wil mold the plastic while you screw it in.

Ingenious design. I printed three of them as stocking stuffers for my kids. I'd like to share a few lessons learned: 1) I had to shrink the screw-on top by 1% along the X and Y axes to allow for an easy fit that only requires hand strength. 2) Due to the large overhand in sections of the blades, I had to reduce the layer height for the propellers down to 0.15mm and reduce printing speed to get high-quality results. I used 80mm/s max for all types of fill, which is probably a bit overkill but the propellers are not a long/large print anyway, so I didn't bother to optimize for speed. 3) Make sure you orient to screw-on top correctly, or else the gears may not spin freely. The hollowed-out side goes towards the inside, the gears. Thanks again for this excellent contribution.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge :) I've printed all with 0.12mm and low speed without issues on Ender3, and I'd like to upload the optimized print profiles for BambuLab but I have to wait for a new printer :)

This thing is amazing. this is probably the first print I did that felt like it was engineered TOO well. It flies up and slams my 20’ (~6m) ceiling even with a soft pull. Minimal post processing needed. My only recommendation is to print the propellers on slow “silent” mode, which makes the quality much better and flies much higher.

Would NOT recommend pla! Super cool, but I printed in sunlu black and white pla, and it was almost impossible to put together. As description recommended petg, I ASSUME pla was the issue. Eventually managed with great difficulties. It was extremely stiff and not free-spinning like in the video. It somewhat works. You have to use a lot of force and it probably doesn't fly as high as it could. Puller keep getting stuck too. Might have to get some petg just because design is amazingly cool though

I did print in pla+ actually, I always forget to mention that. However, I've now had some other prints that do not fit perfectly with this specific color as well (sunlu white pla+) so I wonder if maybe there is something weird with this specific spool or just a coincidence. I've had no such problem with sunlu black pla+ for example. But I haven't done any side -by-side tests for the problematic parts.

for what it's worth - i printed with bambu basic pla and the standard profiles from bambu, and it all fit together very well. no issues at all. it wasn't easy to assemble the gear box but once together everything just worked on the first pull. worth mentioning: if you get any of the gears in there upside down it was definitely jam up just as you described. any chance that happened to you?

This is a fantastic model that printed well and goes together well. The assembly video was very helpful. It flies very well and is a blast to play with.
