The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel; English: the Eiffel Tower) stands on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France, on the banks of the Seine. It was completed in 1889. At the time of its construction, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest man-made structure in the world. It was named after its designer, the renowned architect and structural engineer Gustave Eiffel, and was constructed entirely by Schneider Ironworks (now Schneider Electric). It is one of the world's most famous structures, a symbol of French culture, a landmark of the city of Paris, and the tallest building in Paris. It is affectionately known by the French as the “Iron Lady.” The Eiffel Tower is 300 meters tall, with an antenna that is 24 meters high, making its total height 324 meters. The tower is composed of many separate steel components, appearing much like a collection of model parts. It uses 18,038 pieces of steel, weighing 10,000 tons. During construction, 7 million holes were drilled, 12,000 metal parts were used, and 2.5 million rivets were employed. Except for the four legs, which are made of reinforced concrete, the entire structure is made of steel. A total of 7,300 tons of wrought iron were used in its construction. The tower has three floors, located 57.6 meters, 115.7 meters, and 276.1 meters above ground. The first and second floors feature restaurants, while the third floor houses an observation deck. There are 1,711 steps from the base of the tower to the top. The Eiffel Tower received approximately 6.98 million visitors in 2011. By 2010, the cumulative number of visitors exceeded 270 million, generating €1.5 billion in tourism revenue for Paris each year.
