Description

Experimental project

(Skip to the next section if you're not interested in me ranting.)

So, this started as a fun side project but ended up with me scribbling notes like a madman and printing and measuring a lot of pegboard-related models.
Why? Well, I'm not sure if I was being naive, but it turns out that the "pegboard standard" is a very loose concept.

First, there's the issue of Imperial vs. Metric.
Focusing on the most common variants:

  • In the imperial system, the hole sizes are 1/4", 1/8", and 3/16", with a 1" pitch (the distance between holes).
  • In the metric system, the hole sizes are 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm, with a 25mm pitch.

Close, but not the same.

Working with six different models was annoying but manageable with the help of some variables and expressions in CAD.

Next, I had to test some 3D printable pegboard accessories, and oh my god, I did not expect to fall down the rabbit hole like Alice in Wonderland.

People have designed every kind of hook imaginable—any shape, any size, any pitch.

In the end, I chose to stop testing accessories—sorry about that.

If you decide to take on this project, I’d recommend:

  • To use commercial pegs with a clear standard size
  • To measure any printable accessory you plan to use
  • Better yet, design your accessories while following some basic, common standards

What I’ll probably do is design the accessories I need and share them, including something for wall mounting and possibly for piggybacking onto a Skadis board (just because).

VARIANTS

As stated, Imperial and Metric profiles are available and to recap

IMPERIAL

  • Hole sizes: 1/4", 1/8", 3/16" (all plus 0.0079")
  • Pitch: 1"
  • Thickness: 1/8"

METRIC

  • Hole sizes: 4mm, 5mm, 6mm (all plus 0.2mm)
  • Pitch: 25mm
  • Thickness: 3.2mm

AVAILABLE SIZES

  • 6x6
  • 6x4
  • 6x2
  • 4x4
  • 4x2

If you need something bigger, just ask.

Apologies for the pictures, but I ended up with piles of boards and even I can't remember which one is which. Maybe I'll add something else in the future.

PRINT RECOMMENDATIONS

  • level your bed
  • do not remove from the plate while still warm
