Description

After the success of my Moon Globe I decided to tackle Mars using topographical data by the Mars Global Surveyor MOLA and MOC teams. I simplified this model and reduced the size to 200mm. I recommend my print profile for best results. I used IIIDMAX White PLA+ to print this. Uses the standard Bambulab LED Lamp Kit 001 availabile here: https://us.store.bambulab.com/products/led-lamp-kit-001

Replying to @KevinNaomi :
It's white filament, but I printed some thin yellow and red discs and placed them on the LEDs.

oh, that's a great idea! how thick did you make the disks?

Print profile lacks supports for base. one of the craters is way too thin, resulting in a hole in the model. Printed on X1C using Bambu PLA Glow.

Was surprised at how nice this came out did have that thin spot in the crater but not real noticeable thanks for the file.

Hey Tom, Thanks for sharing the file. Looks really cool. I believe the issue that several people had with a spot not printing was due to scaling the model down. I went down to 127.5mm from the original 200mm and also had the small area which did not print. I will have to print at a larger size and see what happens. Update: After scaling to different levels, I got less missing filament the higher I went, but I still see a very small area at the normal scale model where there is missing filament. I'll keep messing around with it.

One question before I invest the time and filament in printing this: The moon printed perfectly (Awesome!) with six walls, why four walls on this one? thank you Tom for the amazing files

Thank you, I'll try it with four when my filament comes in.

Again thank you for the amazing moon file, it is absolutely the coolest thing I have ever printed. I too have the same problem with the hole in the crater and sometimes in the Valles Marineris. Everything I try on my A1 results in the same issue. It seems that the wall thickness of the mars model is thinner than the moon model.

Tom, great project. I printed the moon, and soon I’ll do Mars. Say a question. Friends ask me to do the same for them. Then they will recommend it to their friends.... I’m not ready to do it for free, because... the printer also costs money. Can I print your designs for money? Say, for the printing service itself? Or do you need some kind of license?

you can also use a gel if you'd like or 3D print a two layer thick red circle to be a filter

there are many more successes though so I don't know what anybody else is doing I never had it happen and I currently printed four dozen of them

Not many people have remarked that the base doesn't match the globe. I downloaded the .3mf file and got two plates; one Mars globe and one LED base (both printed beautifully). Although a lot of design effort went into each of them they clearly are not intended to fit together. I cannot be the only one to notice this. Do have another file around that you accidently swapped into this matched pair? Any chance of getting it? Many Thanks, Tom, for the very cool Mars globe, Jim Duppenthaler
