Seismometer

地动仪是中国东汉时期的科学家张衡创造的传世杰作。

张衡初造地动仪的时间不详（一说115-121年间），复造于汉顺帝阳嘉元年（公元132年）， [1]是世界上第一架地震仪， [5]也是有史以来人类第一次运用科学手段来测定地震方向的器具。 [6]

地动仪“圆径八尺”，形似“酒尊”。东汉一尺约24厘米，以此推算，地动仪直径接近2米。 [9]地动仪有八个方位，它们分别是东、南、西、北、东南、西南、东北、西北，每个方位上均有含龙珠的龙头，在每个龙头的下方都有一只蟾蜍与其对应。任何一方如有地震发生，该方向龙口所含龙珠即落入蟾蜍口中，由此便可测出发生地震的方向。

张衡在公元132年所造的地动仪能够准确记录地震，比西方第一台地震仪（意大利人路吉·帕米里制造于1856年）早了1700多年。

The seismograph is a masterpiece created by scientist Zhang Heng during the Eastern Han Dynasty in China.
The time when Zhang Heng first built the seismometer is unknown (some say it was built between 115-121 AD), but it was rebuilt in the first year of the Yangjia reign of Emperor Shun of Han (132 AD). It was the world's first seismometer and the first instrument in history to use scientific methods to determine the direction of earthquakes. [6]
The seismometer has a diameter of eight feet and resembles a wine lord. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, one foot was about 24 centimeters, and based on this calculation, the diameter of the seismometer was close to 2 meters. [9] The seismometer has eight directions, namely east, south, west, north, southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest. Each direction has a dragon head containing a dragon ball, and below each head there is a toad corresponding to it. If an earthquake occurs on either side, the dragon ball contained in the dragon mouth in that direction will fall into the mouth of the toad, thus determining the direction of the earthquake.
The seismograph built by Zhang Heng in 132 AD was able to accurately record earthquakes, more than 1700 years earlier than the first seismograph in the West (manufactured by Italian Luigi Pamiri in 1856).
