Description

Meet Lez Abled - Disability Pride Edition, a member of the Collection of Willies. July is Disability Pride Month worldwide.

Lez Abled is for those who are or know someone with any form of disability. Disabilities can be visible to others or invisible, both are valid. Disability Pride aims to raise awareness As with all Willies, enjoys being handled, touched, caressed, and toyed with in public and in the privacy of wherever you are and whenever you want.

Personal note

I am very disabled and so this is something very relevant to me.  Living (existing in my case) as a disabled person is no fun.  Everything is extremely difficult and takes far more energy than it ever did before.  I wasn't always disabled and it is getting worse.

If you have not experienced being disabled personally or through a friend or loved one, take a moment to think how everyday existence would be if you couldn't move a limb or several, move without assistance, or be outside because the light is crippling, those are just a few of the things that make life difficult, unfortunately, there are so many more.

If you feel a little sad, think about how you could improve things, it doesn't have to be big, give to a charity that helps others, install ramps in your office building and make tactile signs for offices.  Remember, help, don't take over.  Do not help someone cross the road without first asking if they would like that assistance.  Independence is a tough thing to lose, we know when we need help and when we want to do it ourselves.

What do the ‘flag’ and the colours represent?

  • All six "standard" flag colours: disability spans borders between states and nations
  • Black field: mourning for victims of ableist violence and abuse
  • Diagonal band: "cutting across" the walls and barriers that separate disabled people from society
  • Red stripe: physical disabilities
  • Gold stripe: neurodivergence
  • White stripe: invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
  • Blue stripe: psychiatric disabilities
  • Green stripe: sensory disabilities
