Configuration
The OpenSCAD script allow a wide choice of sundial shapes and sizes to be printed to suit most countries of the world. The early part of the script requires the user to set the latitude, longitude and time-zone, the shape (square, octagonal or round), the size (nominally 200 mm), the numerals (Roman or Arabic). Other settings are optional e.g. DST correction, the dial thickness (mm), the height of the script and of the height and width of the lines on the dial.
Exporting the Model
The sundial model may be exported from OpenSCAD as a complete .stl (PARTNO=undef) or as two, three or four parts (.stl files). The first part is the dial, the second the gnomon, the third is the lettering and numbers and the fourth part consists of the lines. Combinations are possible too. When the parts are dropped onto the build plate of a multi-material slicer, they will all sit on it at the correct height. The filament/colour may then be chosen for each part.
Filament
For most regions of the world (latitude 30 - 70 either hemisphere) the sundial should be printed using a high temperature material such as Pet-G or ABS. The quality is very satisfactory with a 0.4 mm nozzle.
