Description

This is my version of Martin's soapbox derby racer from the Simpson's episode S3E9 Saturdays of Thunder.

Included with the model are the decals for the sides that you can print on paper or decals and adhere to the side of the racer. Also included are three axles (brim is on so you will need to peel the brim away from the axles) and wheels. Slide an axle through each wheel, drop it into the wheel well and apply a drop or two of glue to the ends of the axles. I have the wheels set to black however they appear white in the episode.

An optional windshield is included. This can either be warmed up with hot water and then curved to match the slot in the front of the cockpit, or you can do what I did and use it as a template to cutout a clear windshield. I used a mixing cup but you could use just about any blister packaging like what alkaline batteries are sold in.

Manual support is added to the sides of the body. You can print without, but the quality is a little better with it on.

NOTES FOR PRINTING: I had to touch up the dorsal fin transition between the white and the black with a little paint. I think I had some crappy filament. It might be worth putting a modifier around the fin and slowing the print down in that area.

I wet sanded the model with 220 grit to smooth it out some, then rubbed it with mineral oil to bring the sheen back. I allowed it to “dry” for a couple days before attempting to attach the decals. I used a cheapo glue stick that game with a roll of filament I bought and it stuck fine.
