Description

The Geneva drive, also known as a Geneva mechanism, is a gear system that converts continuous rotational motion into intermittent rotational motion. It's widely used in various mechanical devices for its precision and reliability. I added a secondary locking piece just to make it more interesting: It spins freely counterclockwise, but often will lock up going clockwise.

Some key concepts from Chat GPT:

Rotation Angle per Step: Each step of the Geneva wheel corresponds to a fixed rotation angle, which is determined by the number of slots:

  • 360 degrees/N = Rotation Angle

For example, if the Geneva wheel has 4 slots, each step will be:

  • 360/4 = 90 degrees

Center Distance: The distance between the centers of the driving wheel and the Geneva wheel must be carefully calculated to ensure proper engagement of the pin with the slots:

  • D = √(D^2 - R^2)

For a Geneva wheel diameter of 10 cm and drive wheel radius of 2 cm:

  • D = √(10^2 - 2^2) = 9.8cm

Arc of Movement: The driving wheel's pin moves through an arc when engaging a slot. The length of this arc is related to the rotation angle of the Geneva wheel.

Dwell Period: The Geneva wheel remains stationary while the driving wheel continues to rotate. The length of the dwell period depends on the number of slots and the rotation speed of the driving wheel.

I love those kind of things, this one works well but mainly counter clock wise, it print easy with the designer profile. Please make more :-)

Yes I failed to mention that it spins more freely counter-clockwise and get stuck going clockwise. Thanks and I will work on more!

I really tried to give this the best shot but it just isn't there yet. After re-prrinting multiple warped/broken parts and shaving down holes to fit this thing was barely functional. The top keeps coming off and the tolerances are so unoptimized that the parts grind together as it moves. Cool idea but it still needs work.

It's a v1, but I am surprised you had tolerance issues. Sorry you could not get it to work, thanks for the feedback.

first print on a P1S, using Bambu PLA and developer profile, in less than ideal conditions (breeze, unsteady table). print quality is excellent, no problems with tolerance. Design could maybe use a small washer between the main wheel and the top plate, since I think what people are seeing when it catches (in the unlocked direction) is the spokes catching on the top plate grid. Generally excellent though.

Thank you very much, I will consider the washer. Congrats on the new P1S

列印正常組裝正常,但需要依自己使用的耗材做微調才不會卡卡的,除了單純旋轉外,比較可惜的是沒有其他娛樂效果。

Wonderful model, worked well, but unfortunately a bit stiff in the movement. A little sanding and the problem was solved. I would rework it and add 0.1mm more tolerance. Especially the holes in the gears. But what is really important and what I have added: A washer exactly where the crank and spindle connect, lies directly on the top housing. Otherwise it rubs too easily against the housing.

To fragile and it does not run well.
