Description

This is a cheap and easy first project if you want to get into microcontrollers/LEDs.

MATERIALS

  • Frame.
    I used IKEA SANNAHED 25x25.
  • ESP32/ESP8266 microcontroller.
  • 5V power supply
At least 2 A current rating for 50 WS2812B RGBW LEDs.
I used an old phone charger rated for 2 A.
  • Addressable LED strip, WS2812B or similar.
I used 60 LEDs/m, with total 50 cm used for this project.
  • Wire.
  • Optional: 2A fuse, LED strip connectors, on/off switch.

PRINT INSTRUCTIONS

I printed the individual segments upright in vase mode. PLA white and PLA CF. 0.3mm layer height, 0.6 mm nozzle. Smaller layers will look better if you get close to the picture. Total weight 180 g. Brim required.

Then I just taped the pieces together. The frame constrains them pretty well, so a bit of tape is really enough.

You can customize this model in OnShape.

FRAME

I made this for the IKEA SANNAHED frame. You can use any other hollow-body frame, but you may need to scale the print files then. The uploaded files are for 250x250x45mm frame size.

PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Connect the ESP32 to your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Install WLED: https://install.wled.me/
  3. Cut the LED strip into 3 pieces and connect them with wires using solder or LED connectors. I used a total of 50 cm, which I cut into 3 equal-length segments.
  4. Tape the LED segments to the back side of the white segments.
  5. Do the rest of the wiring. Different ESP boards have different layouts, but usually GND, VIN, and G16/D16/16 are used.
  6. Done! Check out https://kno.wled.ge/ for info regarding WLED.
