This is a medieval tower that can be placed on top of any object with a round shape. The model has a lot of details, and every detail is customizable. 

Here on the side (and at the end in the documentation section) there are a couple of self-explanatory drawings with all the parameters.

 

You can modify:

  • diameter, height, wall thickness of the lower part of the tower;
  • diameter, height, wall thickness of the top part of the tower;
  • height of the junction between lower and top parts;
  • number, height and spacing between the battlements;
  • number and depth of the horizontal and vertical grooves to create the brick effect;

The only thing you cannot control is the archs - as they

are always the same number of the battlements and are as wide as the space between the battlements.

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

Measure the diameter and thickness of the object you want to insert into the tower. When you input the data to customize your model, remember to add some tolerance to avoid the tower being too precise, which might prevent the object from fitting properly.

 

SUGGESTIONS:

  1. It is very frustrating when you print the model and then your object doesn't fit! So remember to add 0.2-0.5 mm to the diameter and thickness of the object to insert (OD and OT). You can always reprint your model and make it more precise, but at least you will start with a functioning model.
  2. While changing the parameters, I suggest making a few small changes at a time. This way, you will achieve your desired results faster than by changing all the parameters at once. It will also help you avoid weird or unexpected results.
  3. When you start changing parameters, keep the definition of the model low, around 32 (default value). Increase the definition only when you have finalized the model to avoid overloading OpenSCAD with the calculation of thousands of polygons.

ADDITIONAL TIPS & NOTES:

The model is quite complex, and there is some “math” to be taken into account when changing the parameters.

  1. Obviously, the depth of the grooves for the bricks cannot be greater than the thickness of the wall itself. WTEW minus GD must always be equal to or greater than your extrusion width.
  2. Avoid the slope of the junction between the top and bottom parts being inclined more than 45°. You get a 45° angle when HJUN is equal to TOPR minus OD/2 minus WTEW. To get an angle below 45° just increase HJUN or decrease TOPR.
  3. The width/diameter of the arches is the same of the distance between the battlements. This means that if you want large arches, they also get taller… and if the top part of the tower is not high enough, you will get a hole on the top part of the arches. So ensure that HTOP minus HB is alway bigger than SB*2.
  4. Always set DEFINITION as a multiple of the number of the battlements: if you have 8 battlements then the definition should be any multiple of 8 (16, 24, 32, 40, etc.).

In summary:

WTEW-GD ≥ your printer extrusion width

HJUN ≥ TOPR-OD/2-WTEW

HTOP-HB > SB*2

DEFINITION = exact multiple of NB

Love the concept, currently printing it for my son so he can build something with empty toilet paper rolls. Would be great if there was also a corresponding ground piece which you then could glue to a cardboard, so basically just the walls. For the moment I just cut it in the slicer.

If you just need the lower part, you can set to zero the height of the junction and of the top. I was planning to make the base of the tower too... unfortunately it took me ages to make what I already did ;P Glad to hear you like the concept .
