Description

Irritated by the left-hand-only hinges on the X1C and P1S chassis? Are you left-handed or just cack-handed? ;-) Or do you want ventilation without the risk of someone knocking the door and breaking it? Wish there was easier access to the chamber for part removal or maintenance? All of the above?! Me too!

So I decided to fix this problem. After many hours of experimentation (and finding all the little sticky-out bits on the chassis), lots of filament and quite a few superglue incidents(!), here we are.

This mod does away with the original glass door entirely, and replaces it with a plexiglass/perspex/acrylic pane held on by magnets on a frame. Have the door on, off or open a bit, on either side of the printer. You can finally move it up against that right-hand wall like you always wanted!

Uses the original 4 door screws, makes no permanent change to the printer whatsoever, and can be installed/removed without trace in a few seconds.

Fits and prints on both the X1C and P1S, and has been tested for many weeks on both. This is not designed/tested on any other printer, and won't fit on anything with a smaller bed. You could make it on a P1P, but then what would you attach it to anyway?!

Will also need:
15x 5x2mm magnets
5x 5x1mm magnets
3mm sheet acrylic for the door (check for temperature range)
Superglue
10mm x 2mm insulation foam tape (optional)

Looks amazing!! Do you have any assembly instructions? I can understand the general idea, but I'd really like to know a few details: 1.What is the size of the acrylic? 2. It looks like the acrylic slides into slots, so I can't use thicker material. Is that right? WIll it be fairly obvious how to go about mounting the various parts? What holds the door in place when it is slid almost over to the edge, as in one of the GIFs? Thanks for posting this.

Hi! Thank you :-) There's a very thorough PDF included in the files which gives you detailed instructions. Download that and see what you think. The perspex is 3mm thick perspex/acrylic sheet. It actually needs to be 320mm x 312mm, but these things have a tolerance when cutting so I ordered 319mm x 311mm which fits fine. Better to be slightly small than too big. Cast Acrylic Sheet is your best bet. No need to get the edge polished or the corners rounded. It goes into a 4-piece frame with long slots to hold it. So no, 3mm is it I'm afraid. But that's easily thick enough and 2mm would be too floppy. I made one version with 3mm picture mounting board for testing. I've kept it, as it's useful if I'm printing something as a surprise for someone in the house! It also includes a jig to print to make sure your corners are 100% square. You can do it without, but it makes it foolproof. If the frame isn't square it sticks in the rails. There's also some little fillets in case your hinges on the case aren't quite square (my X1C was, P1S wasn't) to push the outer frame a tiny bit to square it up. There are 5 magnets top and bottom, at regular intervals. So, you can slide it a bit open and use just 4 magnets, or 3, etc. Mine will stay on the 1 magnet setting, but at that point you might as well take it off entirely in case the magnets lose their grip. I was so happy to do away with the original door. A pain in the wotsits to work around, and an accident waiting to happen. I considered trying to reuse the door glass, but the handle and corner brackets forbade, plus it's too heavy to rely on a small frame. Give it a go, I'd love to see it!

I don't see a PDF file in the .3mf file, or in the "Project" tab when I load it into Bambu Studio", but on the upside, I think I can build it with your description provided here. Are you in Australia by any chance?

oops. Never mind. I found it, buried deep. Thanks! My printer is acting up a bit right now, but as soon as I can, i'll be building it.
