Description

We have a tiny phone-booth of a shower.

Since we moved in years ago, my wife has been repeatedly asking for me to install a Glacier Bay removable shower head/hose/handle thing. I have been a jackass of a husband, slow-rolling it for as long as I could, as I knew that it just wouldn't be a good fit for the size and shape of our humble shower stall. (These things are always so finicky - every time I've used one, I find them unreasonably annoying).

However, my wife is a persistent, strong, independent woman. Eventually, she took it upon herself to install the removable thing without me. Honestly, I was impressed – not because she did some light-duty plumbing work, but because she gave up on my BS and stood up for herself. Indeed, she “smashed the patriarchy” and boldly went after what she really wanted.

Put in my place, I gave it a little while. I tried my best to keep my mouth shut and just deal with it. For a few weeks I held back my worst instincts every time I lightly bumped the hose and sent the shower head flying off its mount. Ultimately, though, it didn't take long for my early concerns to boil to the surface. I was becoming irrationally angry at the way-too-high and precariously-insecure mounting situation imposed by the awkward design of the removable head and handle.

I began to wonder whether this would simply become an irreconcilable difference of opinion. Determined to save my marriage with a bespoke solution, I got to work. I went to school for engineering, bought a 3D printer and a set of calipers, and over the next several months, tirelessly perfected this design. Here it is!

This compact shower-head adapter is now, for us, a daily reminder that a happy marriage requires hard work and a spirit of compromise.

Or, maybe it's just a daily reminder that I'm a weirdo. I don't know.
