other models seem to have the notches at the top and bottom. These hydrometers are at an angle.

The reason for the notches at the top/bottom is so that you insert the meter at an angle, then rotate it horizontal to lock it into place.

Ah that makes sense. The model I tried first the material was to think to do that with the ones I
have. the wider part was still engaged in the slot.
