Description

Did a bunch of research and used a Chatgpt a bunch but low and behold I have been able to create an openscad script that allows you to duplicate your house key just by knowing the key code.

this will work for Kwikset Kw1 and Kw10 as well as Yale Keys

The key code can be determined by using a key decoder (see video below ).

Key decoder can be printed “https://www.yeggi.com/q/key+decoder/

Once you know the key type and Key code just put the key codes into the customize interface and generate a duplicate set of your key. Please note i have not tried all the key types as I don't have all these lock types. see video below for how to use a Key decoder. this is not my video, just something I found online

*Disclaimer this is a plastic key and is not as strong as a regular key. I take no responsibility for damage if the key breaks in the lock. do not use this in a lock that it will be a problem if the key breaks in it. Don't say I never warned you lol

I think the best use of this would be to keep it as a spare to reference if you need a real key made. Let me know your thoughts in your comments, maybe I can improve the script

As a second generation locksmith, this build caught my attention. Of course I pulled a brand new deadbolt off the shelf and did a test print. I used Bambu PLA basic in black and printed it on the A1 mini with the 0.4 nozzle. The key was slightly thick, but functional. There is no shoulder (the bump that insures the key doesn't go in too far) so I had to fiddle with the exact placement, but it did work. I tested it on a KW1 double deadbolt since it takes a good bit of force to throw the weight of the bolt and the key didn't break. We used it about 10 times to check durability and so far so good. I would NOT use this for everyday use, but it is decent enough for a hidden spare key. Please note how easy it is to take a pic of someone's keys and make a working copy without them knowing it and keep your keys put away when not in use. Overall Great Build! Pic 1 Key in lock Pic 2 Original key & copy lined up. You can see the copy is slightly shallower than the original with in the functional margin

oh wow this is some great feedback, thank you so much. I wonder if I can create a new version with the shoulder (bump) in place Yes just a picture of a key is all it can take. pretty scary to think 💭

can you take this print and use it to make a metal key in one of those automatic key copy machines like they have in Walmart?

Can you make on for the Kwikset control/master key in the 816 deadbolt? it’s similar to a kw1 but slightly different. Been trying for a few days to get this to work but no luck

I would not recommend making this key available. This key is used in apartment complexes so management can have full access to everyone apartment. If someone finds out the cuts and has the correct blank it would be very bad.

No different than many houses using the standard trash kw1 in my opinion which is readily available online.

this looks like a great model, specially since I need a spare key. do you think it can be adapted to work with pado locks?
The designer has replied

yes I think it should be able to be adapted according to the specs of the pado lock blank keys and the locks pins, you would need to know the exact way the keys are cut in terms of cut spacing and depths and then essential write script for that
