Description

Dust Defender: CNC Router Dust Collection System

Enhance your CNC router table's performance and maintain a clean workspace with the Dust Defender. Specifically designed for a 65mm spindle, this comprehensive dust collection system efficiently captures and removes dust and debris generated during CNC operations.

Key Components:

Main Shoe: The main shoe fits securely around the 65mm spindle, providing a sturdy base for the dust collection system. It mounts directly to the router spindle, ensuring stability and efficient dust capture.

Rear Clamp: The rear clamp firmly holds the main shoe in place, preventing any movement during the CNC machining process. It is easy to attach and detach, allowing for quick setup and adjustments.

Lightweight Magnetically Attached Dust Boot: The dust boot attaches to the main shoe via strong neodymium magnets, providing a secure yet easily removable connection. It features a raised fence around it to prevent unwanted detachment if the movement of the spindle bumps the workpiece. Removing the dust boot allows for uncluttered access to the collet chuck, facilitating easy tool changes without the need to disassemble the entire system.

Dust Collection Hose Adapter: Designed to fit a standard 2.5-inch dust hose, the hose adapter seamlessly connects to the dust boot, directing debris into your dust collection system. The snug fit ensures no dust escapes, keeping your workspace clean and safe.

Additional Materials Required

  • 1 - 5mm CNC dust brush
  • 20 - neodymium magnets (8x5mm)
  • 4 - M4x16mm socket head screws
  • 4 - M4 heat set inserts

Critical Dimensions:

  • Main Shoe Diameter: Fits 65mm spindle
  • Hose Adapter Size: Fits 2.5-inch dust hose

Usage: The Dust Defender is ideal for any CNC router table with a 65mm spindle. While it was specifically built for a Makita router on the Shapeoko, it is compatible with any CNC router that uses a 65mm spindle, such as trim routers from Dewalt and other suppliers. This system provides an efficient and effective solution for dust collection, ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more productive workspace.

Assembly Instructions:

Main Shoe and Rear Clamp Installation:

  • Insert the M4 heat set inserts into the designated holes in the rear clamp using a soldering iron or heat gun.
  • Attach the main shoe directly around the spindle and secure it using the rear clamp.
  • Use the M4x16mm socket head screws to fasten the rear clamp to the main shoe, ensuring a tight fit.

Magnet Installation:

  • Install the 8x5mm neodymium magnets into the designated slots in both the main shoe and the dust boot. Ensure they are securely fixed and correctly aligned for a firm magnetic attachment. The holes for the magnets are a very tight fit and I recommend using a temperature controlled soldering iron to gently heat the magnets into position as you would with a heat set insert. Be sure the magnets have the correct polarity to match the main shoe.

Attach the Dust Brush:

  • Affix the 5mm CNC dust brush to the bottom edge of the main shoe, ensuring it is evenly distributed around the perimeter. A few drops of superglue will affix the brush in place.

Connect the Dust Boot:

  • Position the dust boot and allow the magnets to snap it into place on the main shoe. The raised fence around the dust boot ensures it remains securely attached even if the spindle bumps the workpiece.
  • Ensure the connection is secure and the boot can be easily removed when needed.

Hose Adapter Installation:

  • Attach the dust collection hose adapter to the dust boot.
  • Connect a 2.5-inch dust hose to the adapter with a hose clamp, ensuring a tight fit.

Final Inspection and Testing:

  • Check Fit and Stability: Ensure all components fit together securely and the system is stable. Make any necessary adjustments.
  • Test the System: Turn on your CNC router and the dust collection system to test its effectiveness. Ensure that dust and debris are being properly captured and removed.

Maintenance:

  • Regular Cleaning: Periodically remove the dust boot and clean any accumulated debris to maintain optimal performance.
  • Inspect Magnets: Check the magnets regularly to ensure they maintain a strong connection and replace if necessary.
