Updates:

22. June 2024 - Uploaded a box to store the samples: Ultimate Sample Box - enjoy!

17. June 2024 - Added Elegoo, Jayo and Kingroon as brands in the OpenSCAD file.

This has been my go-to filament sample I have printed for years now, every time I got a new material type/color. And having these cards as reference for color and transparency is awesome. And now I have learned a little OpenSCAD and recreated it there, for ease of use for other makers! Enjoy!

You can add text in multiple ways - whatever suits you the best. And the card (size, thickness and so on…) itself can be customized too.

Overview

The filament sample contains the following information about the filament material:

  • Brand
  • Series and Color
  • Type
  • Optional extra (fx. price, temperature or something else..)

Customize it!

You can add text in multiple ways:

  • Print a default version with only material type added in the model, and add label or write with a marker afterwards.
  • Add text in the slicer (easy to do in fx. Bambu Studio - see attached files!)
  • Customize text and/or size in the OpenSCAD file - easily done online on MakerWorld’s Parametric Model Maker. Customize → Download → Slice → Print!

OpenSCAD options

The OpenSCAD model that you can customize online, has a lot of options for you to find what you like the best! Here are some of them:

  • Materials (20+ options or custom)
  • Material Brands (15+ options or custom)
  • Material Types/Series (30+ options or custom)
  • Material Color (60+ options or custom)
  • Text sizes
  • Text styles (default, bold, narrow, extra narrow - or a combination)
  • Custom text
  • Size of sample card (length, height, thickness, corner radius, border…)
  • and more!..

(Missing a brand, type, color or something - please let me know!)

Edit custom text in slicer

Here is how to edit custom text in slicer (in Bambu Studio):

  1. Click on the Filament Sample with the ‘Custom’ text on
  2. In the side-panel on the left, click on Objects (next to Process / Global)
  3. Expand the Favorite Filament Sample by pressing the little arrow
  4. Right click on either 'PLA', ‘Color’ or ‘Title’ and press Edit text
  5. Adjust text and size to your liking
  6. Optional: if needed move the text around on the model - simply drag on the pink square in the middle of the text (visible after you pressed Edit text above..)

Print instructions

This is easy - but a few tips:

  • Layer height: 0.2 (makes the layer transparency equal for all layers of that part)
  • Brim: No, not needed
  • Nozzle size: 0.4 works just fine

Happy printing!

ORIGINAL - Customize text in slicer!
Great! I use it to identify what filament I have in the AMS, I usually transfer filament to bambulab spools and sometimes I don't know what material is in the spool.

So far i avoided doing swatches of the filaments i use. But now i actually did it and i am currently printing the first plate. Just wish that MakerWorld would remember the last used parameters for text size and such to keep them consistent - but that's nothing you could fix, so that's no criticism of you. Just something for others to be aware of. Edit to add picture of the first batch

Thanks for the comment. And yes I can't change how it works on maker world currently - but they do update this function - so might happen 😉 Until then you can download the SCAD file and locally use it in OpenSCAD (free software). That way you can change and save parameters to your liking! 😄

I'm seeing some really weird walls when slicing with Orca slicer.

I see. haven’t used Orca - so don’t know why 🤷🏼‍♂️

I see the same thing as well and the final print does not seem as Clean as when it's done via Bambu Studio. Not sure what is the Issue. I have posted on the Orca Slicer Discord to see if anyone can clarify this.

Trying turning wall loops to 1, you might have holes in the text in sharp corners tho. Just about to hit print, will get back to you.

Thank you for creating these customizable swatches. I really like them and want to be able to use them for all my filaments. As you can see in the attached images, I am having a bit of a problem with stringing around the hole. The white and purple ones were created using the customizer and the other two were generated locally in OpenSCAD. They were printed on an A1 Mini, 0.4 nozzle, 0.20mm Standard on the Bambu 3D Effect sheet. (hoping to see which colors looked best on there) The pink and grey filament is new filament that was dried before printing. I tried slowing things down a bit for the pink one, but it didn't seem to help. Do you have any suggestions on how to reduce the stringing around the hole?

looks like 1st layer issues. try to slow down the first layer only - but more than it is now. and make sure the bed is clean so the filament can stick to it, even with short lines 👍🏼

Thank you for the suggestion. I re-cleaned the bed and slowed it for the initial layer and that seemed to help with the first layer issue. I also slowed down the other speeds as well to try to resolve the lines on  top, on the inside corner of the hole. The Sunlu Matte PLA (from a variety pack of small spools) still has some lines there, but the Bambu PLA seems better. It may just be a difference in the filament.
