Description

We all know how important it is to keep the filament dry when it is not in use and it is recommended to store it in an airtight container or vacuum bag along with some silica gel.
There are already quite a few designs on containers that fit inside the center of the spool, but in my opinion it is not an optimal solution, especially if you use a vacuum bag. The bag will seal the area off completely and the reading from the humidity sensor will be misleading.

Instead I decided to design my own silica box that sits on the filament and it will therefore lower the humidity of the air around the filament. The humidity sensor is placed next to the silica to give a more accurate reading. The box itself will hold approx. 20 grams of silica and I find it suitable for a single spool. A version without the humidity sensor is also available, even if you want to increase the amount of silica per spool.

The humidity sensor can be rotated 90 degrees to accommodate both vertical and horizontal storage. The box fits in most spools even if it is full

Nice! Can you please also post a smaller version for 750g spools?

Hi! Glad you find an interest in the design. I’m sorry but I don’t have any 750g spools to test with, but I would imagine that the radius should be smaller? I can’t change the thickness, otherwise the humidity sensor will stick out. The same thing will happen with a half used 1kg spool, the radius will get smaller and smaller and it is impossible to make one size fits all. Have you tried to print one to see how bad it is, If you take a picture I can see what I can do.

Never mind, I just wanted it less tall, so it fits in narrower spools. I don't mind the humidity sensor, I don't use it. I will post the remix below.

Printed in Clear PLA, but the lids aren't fixed at all, they simply rest on the top. I used small tabs of clear tape to keep the boxes closed when I handle the spool/bag. A small lip on the lid and container would make these a certain win, but for now I caution anyone who prints these to be aware. These easily fit in most bags w spools regardless of the amount of filament on the spool. I printed 12 total containers 3 with the Hygrometer slots because I still like the flexibility of this design for their functionality, you can easily fit as few or as many as you like, and move them into position when using Vacuum bags.

I printed them too, the lid is really tight. Have to open it with a screwdriver. I guess it depends on your printer what the result is.
