Description

This script creates a rectangular “mat” of specified dimensions for use in framing pictures, with a cutout in the middle that the artwork sits behind. The default size is for a 3x4" frame.

  • You can specify either a rectangular or oval opening, and the dimensions of the opening. If rectangular, you can enter a corner radius.
  • If you use the OpenSCAD application on your own PC, you can create a “custom” shaped opening imported from an SVG file. Regrettably, SVG importing doesn't seem to work on MakerWorld's parameterized online modeler. Yet.
  • You can shift the opening off center by a specified amount.
  • You can select the angle of the cut (default 45 degrees).
  • As shown in the images of this model, it's nice if you can print the top layer in a different color than the rest. In combination with the angled cut, this gives the ability to have a thin inner border of a different color than the rest of the mat. To do this if you don't have a multi-color printer, use the features of your slicer program to tell it to pause and let you change the filament at a certain height.

If you do run the script locally, you must enable the new roof() method by going to the screen Edit > Preferences > Features in the application. MakerWorld's modeler already supports this method.

Printing Notes

This should print well either face up or face down with no brims or supports at the default 45 degree cutout angle, so consider which side gives the nicer-appearing surface texture for your intended use. For some artworks, the ironing feature of your slicer program might give the most compatible texture.
