Wall Mount Option - Pedestal - 2D Modularity - GridlessFinity - No Hardware
Inspired by my very own Thrifty Filament Shelf, I took the idea a bit further and created a fully modular CD shelving system, which can stack vertically and horizontally, independently of the CD casing size.
It's kind of a vertical Gridfinity for CDs, but gridless.
Better overall connectivity. Just use the mk.8 print profile :-)
Since I hate using supports, this one's designed to be printed without any. The gif's show the print of a dozen:
We are all lazy af, hence don't want to use any additional tools when printing stuff. So this CD shelving system CAN be mounted to a wall using screws and anchors, but doesn't have to.
Thanks to the height unit system (explained below), you can stack the shelves together as you like. They are interoperable in a 2-dimensional way as seen on the picture below:
Due to the rail-system you can easily slide shelves into each other (bottom right to top left) like this:
To float even more, each shelf has a bore for 4.5mm screws in the back. Haven't got any picture yet, because i prefer them standing on a pedestal.
If you want to mount them to a wall, just keep in mind, that they will stack from bottom right to top left!
I recommend using wood screws (and screw anchors when working with dry/brick walls).
Personally, I commonly use the following mounting material:
I also designed a Pedestal if you're not opting for the wall mount option.
I thought it would be a nice idea to highlight favorite bands with a label plate.
Hence, I attached label plates for 1 and 2 height units in the 3mf file.
They are also good for alphabetical/genre sorting.
The shelfs are designed to lay the CDs face down, so you can easily read the title on the spine.
Hence, we call the "Thickness" of the CD the height.
The long side is called the "depth" and the remaining side "width".
To be able to stack this system horizontally an vertically without any constraints, I introduced so called "Height Units".
A common CD case has around 10.5mm in height. Add top and bottom walls of the bracket/shelf and you get 1 HU (height unit).
So, independently of the actual height of a cd case (there are real exotic heights out there), the shelves always increment in full height units.
Every height up to 10.5mm will be considered one height unit.
From >10.5mm up to 25.5mm will be considered two height units, etc...
tl;dr:
Just use the Regular or 2 HU (25.5mm) shelves! They will cover 99% of all use cases.
The attached AiO-3mf file (All in One) already contains a lot of heights.
That said, it is not really necessary to print smaller versions than the standard height. This will only affect the clamp height to make an exact fit for the CD case.
It's not necessary to go below standard size because the bottom of a shelf is 60% of the length of a standard CD casing and therefore able to bear the case without tipping over.
However, it is necessary to use at least 2 HUs for bigger CD-Case heights because they wouldn't fit into the regular one.
Also, there's no space-efficiency in place. So, if three 2mm cases would fit a single HU, it doesn't scale in a space-saving way. But who knows what's to come :-)
The attached 3mf files should cover 90% of all use-cases (I assume), but if you've got an exotic CD casing which isn't covered by the heights provided, just download the "f3d" archive and adapt the parameter "cd_height".
Everything will scale perfectly fine.
Disclaimer: Haven't tried sizes below 2mm height tbh.
Any constructive feedback is welcome.
