Silicone Bed Spacers and Shims

Because the heated bed come in somewhat warped and the tolerance on the aluminum spacers installed by Anycubic can vary by a lot it is difficult to level and get a good first layer just adjusting Z-offset alone.

To fix that you can swap them with silicone spacers or shim the stock spacers.

You can choose between a silicone spacer from Amazon, AliExpress or shimming the stock bed spacers. There have been reports that going with silicone spacers over shimming the hard spacers. reduced VFAs. The choice is yours.

I have included premade models just download and print also I have included 3 Parametric Models that can be easily adjusted to fit your needs.

  1. Bed Shims for Silicone Spacer (Printed with any filament you choose)
  2. Bed Shims for Stock Spacer (Printed with any filament you choose)
  3. Parametric Bed Spacer (Recommended only to be printed in (ASA or ABS or better)

Download and use Fusion 360 for free. Link: Fusion 360

Here is how to adjust Parametric File in Fusion 360

If you go lower than .2 making shims make sure to adjust your layer height and first layer accordingly to accommodate the higher resolution for dimensional accuracy. Your layer height should be devisable by the number of layers need to make that height. Learn more about layer height click here

Prerequisites

  • Put your printer on a nice flat surface while doing these procedures.
  • Make sure your printers frame is square and true.
  • Verify your X-Gantry is parallel with your Heated Bed.
  • If you have not completed these steps, I recommend for instruction on how to accomplish this. Go Here before applying silicone mod.

How to Replace Spacers and apply Silicone Mod (I used Kobra 2 Max as reference)

  • Remove the PEI sheet
  • You are able to replace spacers without completely removing the bed on Kobra 2 Max.(Other printers may vary) Still up to you if you wish to remove the bed will not make a difference. The directions below I will describe how to do it without completely removing bed for faster install.
  • Unscrew all the outer bed screws and the middle closest to front of printer and remove from heated bed.
  • Unscrew the furthest middle bed screw till you have one or two threads remaining.
  • Download and install the shims you need on your silicone spacers. The spacers should be installed facing down so that only silicone is in contact with the build plate.
  • ***On the Kobra 2 Max I recommend starting with 1mm shim for 18mm silicone spacers.
  • You should now be able to lift up and remove the original spacers and replace them with silicone spacer.
  • It is recommended to keep the original middle spacer stock to have a baseline. This will be 0 Reference point to level your bed. You can keep both middle if reference is within acceptable tolerance. If not remove the front one.
  • Screw the bed plate back using the middle screw first. Tighten it well.
  • Download a dial indicator mount.
  • You can find Kobra 2 Series one here Anycubic Dial Indicator Mounts for Kobra 2 Series Printers
  • Install your dial indicator.
  • Move the dial indicator beside of the middle back spacer that is still stock.
  • Lower dial indicator. Keep lowering about 5 to 10mm after it touches the build plate to take slack out of dial indicator.
  • Zero the dial indicator.
  • Now that you have your Zero reference move the dial indicator beside each bed screw that has been shimmed.
  • Start with the front middle bed screw go ahead and tighten it to match reference point.
  • Then in a clockwise fashion tighten each screw a little at a time.
  • You don't want to tighten one screw all at once because you could warp your bed.
  • Instead move around making small adjustments in a clockwise fashion till your dial indicator matches your reference point (Middle back Screw on Kobra 2 Max)
  • Once finished with this. Turn On your printer.
  • Heat up the bed let it heat for a bit after it reaches temp let it soak in, so all thermal expansion settles. (This can take up to 30min)
  • Check all screws with dial indicator see if there is any variance adjust if needed.
  • Congratulations you just trammed your heated bed.
  • Rerun Auto Level and Vibration Compensation.
  • Now run a First Layer test adjust your new Z-offset.
  • Here are two for all Kobra 2 Series
  1. Anycubic Kobra 2 Max Bed Level First Layer Calibration Squares Aligned with Bed Screws
  2. Anycubic Kobra 2 Pro Bed Level First Layer Calibration Squares and Brim Test Also works with Kobra 2 / Kobra 2 Neo

OCD Level

If after silicon mod you still have some low/high spots or If you want an extremely level bed with variances as low as 0.0045mm get some Kapton tape (Amazon , AliExpress). The tape is usually just 0.1mm thick and will help you patch the problematic spots that cannot be fixed with simple screw adjustment. You can also use Aluminum Tape really anything that will give you the size you need and is heat resistant. Video at bottom for reference.

Note: The spacers should be installed facing down so that only silicon is in contact with the build plate.
