Description

kite
Traditional Chinese handicrafts
Kites were invented by ancient Chinese laborers during the Spring and Autumn period of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, dating back over 2000 years. According to legend, Mo Zhai made wooden birds from wood and developed them for three years, which is the earliest origin of kites in humans. Later, Lu Ban used bamboo to improve the material of Mo Zhai's kites. It was not until the Eastern Han Dynasty, when Cai Lun improved his papermaking skills, that people began to use paper to make kites, known as "paper kites".
During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, kites began to become tools for transmitting information; Starting from the Sui and Tang dynasties, due to the development of the paper industry, people began to use paper to frame kites; In the Song Dynasty, flying kites became a popular outdoor activity among people.
In the 13th century AD, after the Italian Marco Polo returned to Europe from China, kites began to spread in the West. Some believe that kites were introduced to Korea and then to Japan around the 10th century, and only to Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries. Starting from the Sui and Tang dynasties, due to the development of the paper industry, people began to use paper to frame kites; In the Song Dynasty, flying kites became a popular outdoor activity among people. Song Dynasty scholar Zhou Mi wrote in "Old Stories of Wulin": "During the Qingming Festival, people go to the suburbs to fly kites, and only return at dusk." "Kites" refers to kites. The vivid scenes of flying kites are depicted in Zhang Zeduan's "Along the River during the Qingming Festival" during the Northern Song Dynasty and Han Chen's "Hundred Sons" during the Song Dynasty.
There are two main reasons why the Song Dynasty became a stage of development. Firstly, the prosperity of urban culture and economy and the rise of folk handicrafts. Secondly, the Song Dynasty advocated traditional festival customs, which provided favorable conditions for the development of kites and the entry of festival entertainment activities. During this period, folk kite flying became a popular activity among the masses and a subject in the artistic creation of literati and literati. At that time, due to the participation of literati, kites made great progress in both binding and decoration. Meanwhile, due to the demand for kites in society, making kites has developed into a specialized profession.
