Description

So…

My 7-year old daughter pointed out that the miniature version of my “Modular Wind Tunnel for STEM Education” that I released for free as a display model was not, in fact, modular itself.

She suggested that I re-design it to be printed in small pieces – each with magnets – so kids can build the sections together in the right order as a fun play set.

It was such a great idea, how could I resist?

The process of printing and assembling the full-size wind tunnel project is certainly an endeavor – perhaps not one that will hold the attention of small kids.

So, make them this interactive 1:10-scale version first as a means to introduce the project and describe the parts that you'll be building and what they do. Let them tinker with the configurable components of the tunnel to get familiar with it.

When they're ultimately done playing with it, this play-set version of the miniature tunnel is also compatible with the Gridfinity support base and Display Base available as part of the display model version.

Build Notes:

Provided are:

  • Individual STLs,
  • Single STL with all parts oriented correctly, and
  • Ready-to-print 3MF project files for PrusaSlicer and BambuStudio (3-color w/ AMS)

If you need to use the STLs and configure your own slicer settings, use these notes:

  • Print all parts in the orientation shown in the screenshots below.
  • None requires supports.
  • Only the honeycomb flow straightener (solid flat square) requires special attention:
    • Configure the part to print with:
      • 2 walls/perimeters
      • 0 top/bottom layers
      • ~35% honeycomb infill
    • Add two modifier blocks that reverse the above settings for the areas where the magnets are embedded (yellow boxes below).
