Description

Update: checkout my new manual filament loading system that works with any printer and also dry boxes: https://makerworld.com/models/478169

---------------

I love my A1 Mini - but I dislike manually loading filament by pushing it up the long Bowden tube. I also am not keen on the filament is handled in general - as it's too prone to tangles. (I do not have an AMS lite).

  • This model addresses both issues helping quickly load filament while routing the bowden higher and keeping the filament in check during printing preventing tangles.
  • You can also see the handle move while loading and printing which helps know things are working well.
  • It's easy to install, mounting to the stock filament holder mount and then allowing the spool holder to mount to it.

It can also be used with any other printer if you use the stand for it here but I recommend using my manual filament loading system instead your can find here :  https://makerworld.com/models/478169

You will need:

  •  3x 608 bearings
    • one for each gear and one for the handle.
  • It also supports using a PC4-M10 connector to hold the bowden tube in place -
    • but you can use a friction fit alternative in the file instead.
    • It's easier to fit these to the part first before adding the gears on.

Printing and assembly instructions

  • There are two versions of the feeder body in the file
    • the original one with the pins that hold the bearing built-in and
    • a new one where the pins are separate - I recommend this version as it means you can get a better fit depending on your tolerances.
      • On this plate, there are two sets of pins - one slightly narrower and one slightly wider so you can choose the best fit for your bearings.
      • If you print this - check which pins have a good fit for your bearings - you do not want them to be loose in the bearings as the gears will slop about - then push them into place on the feeder body
        • Long pin on the right, short pin on the left.
  • Insert the bearings into the gears
    • The fit for them is purposely tight, though its a bit looser in the current design that the original design
    • If a bit of force is needed put them in place in the gears, turn the print over then put your weight on the gears and they will click into place
    • If you want to use the handle put a bearing into one of the 4 holes of the big gear and then slide the handle piece into the center of the bearing
  • If you are using an PC4-M10 screw that into the top of the body before putting the gears in place as that is easier.
  • If you are using the printed insert instead put it in - it should screw in, but if not lightly tap it into place
  • Then put the gears on - the smaller gear first on the left, the larger one on top on the right.
  • Then slide the adapter block onto the A1 mini spool holder bracket
  • Slide the body onto the side of the adapter block
  • Slide the original spool holder onto the back of the block.

Took a couple of tries to get the main body to not warp at the end. I added a brim and that took care of it. Printed in GiantArm PETG.

oh. you might also want to take a look at the optional stand for it if you're not wanting to mount the spool on the printer

Could you post more photos showing how to assemble this device or a video showing the device from different angles... I printed it out and I'm having difficulty assembling it.

I believe I succeeded, however I don't know what to do with the two printed pins. The smooth pin and the threaded pin, what to do with them?

works like a charm. was a little tough getting the bearings on, but got it on.

thanks for letting me know. I've made them tight on purpose so the gears don't come lose, though I'm a little worried they will be too tight for some people. good to hear it worked for you.

some taps with a hammer and it went right on. also, let me add this. this is taking so much less time to load filament. one of the better upgrades I’ve made for a printer!!

Great! I love mine but I wondered if I was alone and if it was worth the hours getting it right. The effort was worth it if only one other person benefits 😊.

Good print, bearings tight as Dick's hatband but I just grabbed a bigger hammer!

Attempting to insert bearings broke the entire model, wasted 150G....

oh no. I'm sorry. I just uploaded a slight tweak making the bearing fit a little looser. I'll also add a test print to the design so people can test. might be worth also ensuring you have filament calibration enabled

there's also now a version with separate pins for the main body so if you have issues you can just reprint the pins

Printed very well and and working fine with the handle but got stuck filament every couple of minutes at printing. Printed with PETG.

Can you explain how he got stuck so we can see if we can address it because I've not seen any issues like that.

It looks like the extruder is not able to pull the filament consistently. Maybe the gears are a little too sturdy. The extruder is clicking while pulling. The last time I got this problems was with Geeetech Matte PLA because the filament was way too sturdy on the spool and the extruder hasn't enough power to pull it consistently. I will reprint the gears and scale it a little bit to test it again.

Works great! I think I done the assembly a little backwards so it was a little pain (make sure to screw in the PTFE connector before putting the gears on the frame) but otherwise it works like a charm, Also works fine with TPU! :D

Oh - do let me know. Works well for TPU for me so will be interesting to see if it doesn't work for you!

Just done a small and quick TPU print and indeed it works fine! :) I have updated my original comment to reflex that. I'm a little surprised as I thought this would cause the TPU to stretch while being extruded.

很遗憾告诉你,这个不能在A1上使用,因为A1的X轴的电机位置比较靠后,会与你的零件干涉。 I'm sorry to tell you that this cannot be used on A1 because the X-axis motor position of A1 is relatively backward and interfere with your parts.

thanks for letting me know. any chance you can post some pictures of the side and back of the A1 as I've been unable to find any clear ones online. Maybe I can make a version that will work.

man I need this for the A1 full size. the mini is actually easier to load than the full size. very cool, will be printing this for sure!

I got you! print this along with the stand for it and it should work with the A1! https://makerworld.com/en/models/463362#profileId-371880 I find it's hard to believe that no one else thought this was an issue and had designed something similar before! Threading filaments up long reverse Bowden tubes is really blooming. annoying!
