Description

The reason behind this project

I absolutely love 3D-printed storage systems, but there's one thing I don't like about them: how the bins connect to each other. With most systems out there, you need to print a base grid or tiny connecting pieces, which is a bit of a hassle. And the attempts at interconnecting storage systems are not aestheticly pleasing. That's why I came up with this new design! I wanted interlocking bins of various sizes that can connect on each side but with a sleek and simple design.

I've also added small bumps on the inside, which means you can add accessories and customise each bin to a dedicated task.

And to create custom storage boxes, I've adapted my SnapLock model to accommodate the bins.

How to choose the size

The standard bin, Bin_1x1x1, is 60x60x50mm outer dimensions.

All the dimensions in the STL names are based on those dimensions*

Every bin is named as follow : Bin_length x width x height

The other flat components such as lids are named : Lid_length x width

*The other bins are not exact multiples of the standard bin as I take into account the interconnecting part

Test print

I encourage you to test the fit by printing 2 Bin_1x1x0.5

It should be a nice, snug fit, but not so tight that it's impossible to split.

Printing

All the STLs are oriented to be printed directly

No support needed

You can use any material

The sweet spot between material use and rigidity for me is 2 walls ans 5% infill with a 0.4mm nozzle (bigger nozzle should work as well)

Accessories

You can even put the bins on their side to act as drawers.

For the moment I have designed several accessories that fit inside or outside the bins :

  • Drawers (I used the plastic's elasticity to lock them in place while closed)
    • Assembled drawer
    • Screw drawer
  • Lid (to close any bin
  • Screw organizer
  • Tray
  • Battery holder
  • Pen holder
  • SnapLock storage box

Feel free to give me some feedback if you give this project a try :)

Great design. I really like how you don't need any additional prints to link them together.

I like this interlocking design. I'd like to see more trays and pices added in the future. Here are my notes after printing it: 1- Different colors have different tolerences. So it's better to test all colors. 2- I didn't like the 2x2 tray on Plate#14. It won't look good except with a 0.2 nozzle or maybe changing the design to make less rounded. I'd also like to suggest making a similar tray that fits large sticky notes which are ~ 7.1mm x 7.1mm Cheers

Thanks for your design! I like the fact that it doesn't need additional connectors.

This project looks very nice, thanks for that. But i have 2 ideas / wishes: 1. Have you ever thought about deeper versions? I think usually you would put those boxes next to something in a cabinet (for example a 3D-Printer). While having limited space in width and height, most cabinets should be more than deep enough to handle x4 versions of your parts. I for example would love to have the comobinations bin_2x1x4 / screw_drawer_2x1x4 and bin_1x1x4 / screw_drawer_1x1x4. 2. Would it be possible to have a frame to connect vertically and horizontally stacked boxes? You could put a pencil box and some screw boxes horizontally (meaning flat on the ground) and then have bigger drawers behind them stacked vertically (as a tower). In this case I think it would make sense to connect them, so they are all one connected thing. And from what I can see I would guess, that something like this should even be printable regarding the angles.

Hey, thank you for the feedback. Yes I am planning on uploading more sizes but I wanted to see first if people liked it and where able to print the parts accurately given the tight tolerances. And for the connecting part, I didn't plan to do one but if there is demand I might do it 😁

Thanks for the info. Printing went well. Connecting two boxes was a bit of work (needed some force), but did work out in the end. For the assambly a bit wider tolerance may would have helped, but on the other side I don't want them to come apart when connected. I would love a connecting part. I only have very limited space next to my printer in a cabinet. I can barely fit the 2x wide bins next to it. So I would like to have some bins on the cabinet floor in the front, like a little tray for filament trash from the calibration process, a tray for things you need often, and then on the back some drawers for things I don't need that often like the deburring tool, glue, etc. which unfortunately are also too big for a 2x depth drawer. And I think it would be great to have them connected. Maybe even with a slight offset, so you can open the lowest drawer above the front bins.

This looks incredible. If nobody has mentioned it already, how about HSW compatible brackets on the rear of those drawers? I wish I knew how to create such a model 🫤

That looks promising, I hope it'll be parametric and shared soon!

Thank you for the boost ! All the files in the pictures are already available as STL. Maybe I should do a 3mf with all of them inside

Yeah, I didn't check STLs, so I thought only box of one size is available. Having all of them in 3mf would be great!

I believe the 3x1 that holds the pen insert is missing from the files? I can see a 3x2 on print bed #1 but none of the beds has a 3x1.
