Description

Here’s a unique model that allows you to create your own tricolor filament. Instead of purchasing pre-made filament rolls, you'll use your 3D printer to directly print a filament-like structure. This process involves printing a model that itself functions as 3D printer filament. You choose three colors to incorporate into the model—designated as top, middle, and bottom layers. These layers are fused during the printing process to form a continuous, multicolored filament strand. Once printed, this custom filament can be used just like standard filament to add a personalized touch of color to your 3D printing projects.

When used in your 3D printer, the tricolor filament exhibits unique characteristics similar to commercial dual and tricolor options. Depending on the arrangement of colors and the orientation of your print model, you can predictably influence where colors appear on your final print. For example, you can anticipate your three colors (top/middle/bottom) to show up in consistent bands throughout your printed model, blending beautifully from front to back. This arrangement offers a degree of control over the visual outcome, allowing for creative and stunning effects in your printed objects.

Printing Hints

I highly recommend using a Bambu Textured PEI Plate if you do not already have one. Utilize one side of the plate exclusively for PLA filament and the other side for PETG. This prevents adhesion problems caused by residual contamination from incompatible plastics.

For optimal printing results, also ensure that your printer bed is thoroughly cleaned to prevent additional adhesion problems. These simple steps can significantly enhance the quality and success of your prints.

LARRY the tiny Dino has been the featured subject in the photos showcasing the multi-color filament that I’ve been creating. All the filaments I used to create the multi-colored effects were made from matte PLA. The multicolor appearance is somewhat more subtle than what you might see in pre-made dual-color filaments, which often use silk-type filaments for a more pronounced effect.

Happy printing!

Excelent idea. Used Purple, orange and yellow. The yellow just made a little brighter on one side but overall great.

Looks good. Lighter colors like yellow, pink and white tend to get dominated by the other colors.

White is the color that is most easily dominated by other colors. Using Gray and White as the two colors should give you a lighter gray and you may be able to see a subtle change depending on if you put the white on the middle layer vs the top or bottom layer.

Unfortunately I don't think I can fit any more loops of filament on the A1 mini's print bed.

Works great as long as you calibrate extrusion flow. I had an idea to do this with white and black and then feed it back into the printer and print the same thing again, repeating for a few cycles to permanently melt them into grey filament (i don't have any grey spools), but some filament would be lost due to the end of the filament string disengaging with the extruder, so it wouldn't be able to print the full 23.4g of the next cycle. For this reason, could you upload a few versions with progressively less length? I think it would be worth a try to create new gradients with existing colors

That's a good idea. I'm cooking up a few more variations and I think I could probably make one that could completely mix it in one pass. I'll do some tests of it next week.

This gave me a new thrill to start printing again. One of the most fun things to print. And the possibilities are endless.
