Description

Summary

I previously designed and shared some bird feeders ([here](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4657703) and [here](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4787565)). I'm quite happy with them. But they tend to be used by large birds and small species struggle to get their share.

I hope this version will solve this issue. I designed it so the food (mainly seeds) cannot be accessible if the bird cannot fit its head inside the hole. And the distance between the stand and the hole is voluntarily short to prevent larger birds to easily get their way.

Only three parts :

  • the main body is mainly a cylinder with a hole and a slope that brings the seeds close to the hole; it also features extensions on the sides, to hang the feeder to a horizontal branch or attach it to the trunk of a tree or a pole. There are two versions available: one with a bare hole and one with a little protruding ring around the hole, that acts as an additional visor.Note that this version requires more supports. I designed a slit on the side to check wether the tank needs to be re-filled. You just have to get a sheet of 1mm thick transparent PC (polycarbonate, you can find it easily on Amazon for instance) and cut it to get a 10x125mm band. Then just slide it down, it should stay in place without any need for glue.
  • the slide, that fits inside the main body. It's the bottom part of the tank where seeds are stored and can progressively flow down thanks to a slope opposite to the main body's.
  • the cap, that fits at the top of the main body. A small tolerance was made so you can push it down and it will stay firmly in place but you can still remove it to refill.
  • [optional]: the 'ring' that fits the front hole if you chose to print the bare version of the main body. You can choose not to use this part at all, but if you want to add it, you will have to glue it (I used hot glue).

Print time is rather long as parts are large. I use PETG because it's weatherproof and quite foodsafe.

If you wonder: the holes at the bottom are here to evacuate moisture should it accumulate inside the feeder.

Notes:

Supports on the sides of the main body to print the parts used to hang or attach the bird feeder. You will also need supports for the 'ring' part if you choose the main body that features it or if you don't and want to print it later (no flat part on the 'ring').
