Description

Please rate the print profiles - It would help tremendously.

Configurable, print-in-place, self-locking cable label. You can adapt the shown text and cable diameters. Just a single color change is needed to make the text stand out on both sides.
It prints fast and you can print many labels in one go.

The general idea for a slide-on label is by ThomPatterson, seen in his great cable-label model. I designed a new version in OpenSCAD (to make it easy to include the text into the STL model), which minimizes the amount of filament needed per label, which includes an option for oval cables (there are many in EU) and which is overall a more snug fit.

STLs are available for:

  • Prusa
  • PSU
  • Lamp
  • USB hubs
  • Bosch IXO
  • Shredder (typical EU oval cable crosssection)
  • Intel NUC
  • Oscilloscope
  • Cat6
  • … and you can create your own using OpenSCAD:

Customizing

The names and cable diameters are configurable.
To configure, please

Print & attach

The model does not need support material at all.

Just a single color change is needed, at 0.6mm, to make the text stand out like in the picture above. (Since the two halves are printed at the same time, both facing “down” with the text)

Then, put the lower part around the cable and slide the upper part in to fix the label. Make sure the little identation is “at the end” when shifting the upper part on.

Share your make

If you could take a picture of an actual print, please "Comment" and attach the picture. - I am curious to see your uses in the wild!
Also please leave a review with stars. If the option does not show up, make sure to download the model when you are logged in with your user and after a while the rating option will appear.

Thanks

Thanks go out to krupkaj for the picture of his 5V, 9V, 12V cable labels.

Detailed customizing instructions

  • Download latest version of OpenSCAD, (See section "Development snapshots" at (https://www.openscad.org/downloads.html) )
  • Download the "Ultimate_Cable_Label_Vx.scad" file from here.
  • Open the .scad file in OpenSCAD.
  • Make sure to activate “textmetrics” in OpenSCAD, it is needed for this model:
    Go to: Edit → Preferences → Features → textmetrics
  • Change the variables to your liking:
    • To display the customizer, in the OpenSCAD "View" menu, the option called [Hide customizer] must be unselected.
    • Alternatively, change variables in the code: You find the variables in the beginning of the .SCAD file:
      Change the cable diameter, optionally set a “cable_flat” diameter smaller than the first diameter if your cable is oval. Set the text to show on the label:
      cable_dia=6.6;
      cable_flat=cable_dia;
      text="Prusa";
  • Press "F5" to get a quick preview.
  • Press "F6" when you like the preview. This will render the geometry and takes a little time.
  • Press "F7" to save the geometry to an .STL file.
  • Slice and print the .STL file.

Some Fixes if you have issues with OpenSCAD:

1) Your font of choice is not found by OpenSCAD on your PC.

2) OpenSCAD won't pick up newly installed fonts in C:/Windows/Fonts.

  • In case new fonts are missing, put the font TTF files also in C:\Program Files/OpenSCAD/fonts/Liberation-2.00.1/ttf and restart OpenSCAD again.
  • Alternatively, put them in C:\Program Files/OpenSCAD/fonts/Lib
