Description

I was very excited to get my Veteran’s pledge of the 10th Anniversary edition of Firefly: the Game. I loved how every deck had a place in the insert, even with a little logo so you knew where every deck was stored. But I was extremely disappointed when I realized that this does not really help to speed up playing the game. You need to have a place to store the discards of many of the decks so they can be searched through during the game. Also, having one large holder of cards means all of the cards are to one side of the map and harder to find. The tray that holds some of the decks AND the playing mat is particularly unfriendly to the gaming table. I prefer to have the decks as close as possible to their matching planets. My solution is these deck holders.

WARNING: You will not only have to recycle the bottom cards holder (but not the clear plastic lid!), you will also have to cut apart (shudder!) the second level tray that holds the additional decks and the play mat.

I have laid out all the plates with the total number of models that you will need to print. The spacers are colored grey and black to match the motif on the bottom of the box. Using multiple colors is totally optional, but I included the spacer to make it easier to place the plastic lid over the first layer of deck holder. If you don’t have the spacers glued to the bottom of the box, your deck holder will slide around but you need them all in the middle of the box for the lid to fit over them.

DESIGN NOTES:

I iterated over these designs many time to come up with this final result. If you like, you can follow my progress to come up with this design on this BoardGame Geek thread (https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3264702/how-to-handle-discards-with-the-insert). Also, you can find the “source” document for these models in OnShape (https://cad.onshape.com/documents/5e35b5f96d97a1d1b77a2f98/w/f171b8b36d63e923edc324ac/e/bab7f179236d3ef3d56ca73c).

My overall goal is to make it faster to get the game onto the table. I also wanted it to fit easily into the 10th Anniversary box. Some of the shape and size constraints are based on that. It does fit sleeved cards, but I am using sleeves that are thinner than premium sleeves, so you might have some issues if you using premium sleeves, especially with the Navigation decks.

Most of the deck holders are assembled in OnShape from a single size deck holder. In Bambu Studio, you might see something like “Supply Triple” that is composed of three parts called “Supply Single”. I was not able to figure out how to simplify this.
