Description

This is a cute mechanical egg - you can move the upper halve up and down with the printed key or an 6mm allen key. You can also lock something inside if you want, but there is not so much space due to the mechanics. The print is not too difficult but requires a proper calibrated printer.

I have printed this in the new Bambu Galaxy PLA and the key with Basic Black PLA. It's important to use the supplied print template because everything has been tested with those settings.

Print & Assembly instructions:

There are 3 print plates (Lower Halve, Upper Halve, Key)

  1. If you don't have a 6mm allen key you can start printing the lovely key on print plate 3 first. This is the key used to open and close the egg.
  2. Now print the lower halve on print plate 1. Do a normal PLA print with the supplied print profile and it should come out like this (as long as you have a well calibrated printer):
  3. Get the egg off the print plate, this will normally also remove the support on the bottom side of the egg, otherwise remove it manually.
  4. Now turn the egg around and you should see a tiny hole and a small circle. I have marked it in the image below. You need to get into the hole with a very small allen key or something similar so you can break out this support and open up the hole. Be careful to not break out anything beyond the 2nd red line by mistake.
  5. Afterwards it should look like this:
  6. Now you can see the access to the inside screw. Using the printed key or an 6mm allen key you can put it in this hole and start to turn it. The first time it will crack off the inside support and free up the screw. The screw itself is locked inside the outer wall and the screw holder.
  7. Now print the 2 print plate, again be sure to use the supplied print profile - it should be an easy print:
  8. Just pop it off and remove the below support.
  9. Now you can put the upper halve on the lower halve together, by fitting the threaded rod into the thread of the upper halve. Gently screw it together by turning the lower halves screw with the key. Be sure to align the 4 guiding rods to fit into the holes of the upper halve - always be gently so nothing breaks. Now you can screw it together - the screw and the thread should fit well if your printer is well calibrated. It will go easier the more you open and close it. Never close it too tight, otherwise you may break the screw or damage the inside thread - remember it's just PLA.
  10. Enjoy your mechanical egg 💖
