Description

I wanted to keep my digital calipers readily available (not IN my desk, but ON it) without it being horizontal and taking up a bunch of space and getting lost amongst my projects. I came up with this corny idea of turning the boring “caliper” into “Excalipur” (as in “Excalibur”, the legendary sword of King Arthur, or the “sword in the stone”). I was shocked when I couldn't find something quite like it already online on various 3D-printing sites. I figured this was going to be an important lil side project to do before continuing with my existing ones. Totally worth it.

I didn't spend too much time in Blender before deciding that if I didn't want this “side project” to become a huge endeavor of learning new tools all of a sudden, I should probably just find existing free-to-use rock models. (No, not you Dwayne Johnson). Luckily, Makerworld user Josh Campbell had my back with these awesome lil tabletop game rocks! One of which I found perfect to resize a little before using it for my stand! They weren't intended to be blown up in size the way I have, but I actually really like the charm of the rock just starting to show some polygons around the edges. As you may see in my print profile, I've opted for some light fuzzy skin, which helps with the surface texture as well.

I've sized the slot for these wildly popular, cheap calipers that I use. But cutting a rectangle of a hole for whatever size you've got shouldn't be difficult in most basic 3D-modelling software (I use 3D builder for stuff like that).

Mine is printed on my P1S in Bambu Lab PLA Matte Gray. Although I may add some detail painting in the future!

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do! or that it at least gave you a chuckle!
