Description

GIF - Exploded View Animation

An adjustable handle that can be attached to any existing standard full-size hacksaw blade. This compact tool allows you use the blade in tight / hard to reach areas, and where a full-frame would foul with the material.

I also have various other models for various blade types & are yet more compact in size. Feel free to check those out too:

All designs incorporate opposing dual thumb CAM levers with positive snap shut to ensure the blade does not slip once held & it is as safe as possible to use. This took a lot of prototyping & testing but works great. It is quick & toolless to adjust….and satisfying to use as a result.

Most standard ‘full size’ hacksaw blades are 0.5" (12.7mm) wide by approximately 0.6 - 0.7mm thick, if you want to double check yours for compatibility as anything this wide (or smaller) should fit fine.

Note: The CAM levers have been deliberately designed to be tight fitting to avoid the blade slipping in the tool. That said, if after the first few engagements & releases of the thumb lock it has not eased to a point you are comfortable using it, then you could try printing the smaller CAM levers from the Print profile provided. Additionally, if you have a thinner than standard blade or a loose fit, then you may want to print the Larger CAM Levers profile.

If you like this model then you may also like my sliding steel ruler limit block which also incorporates a CAM locking mechanism. Or any of my other DatumCAD designs :)

Fasteners: For this model you will need 2x M3 x 30mm fixings which act purely as strong pivot axles to the cam lever.

Assembly:

  • Insert the CAM lever into the Housing. Tip: Insert with the level in the closed / horizontal position as the holes will then line up easier.
  • Insert M3 Fixings. Tip: The fixings should pass though the handle housing counterbore hole & the CAM lever relatively unhindered, but then will need lightly screwing into far handle hole which has been deliberately sized so as to require some tightening without to much force. (Remember these are just acting as pivot points, no need to tighten down hard, but equally the fixing should not want to fall back out either.)
  • Insert Blade. Top Tip: Open both of the CAM levers up around 180degrees from the closed position, so the CAMs don't grab the blade upon insertion. Once you have in the desired location, simply lock both CAMs fully down.
  • Enjoy - your adjustable hacksaw handle is now ready to use.

I love designing for 3D printing, please take a look at all my other models which are all free (and will always continue to be)… if you value any of the downloads enough & are able to support me, then please consider buying me a coffee to keep me going! www.buymeacoffee.com/DatumCAD

Handle & CAM Levers (0.16mm layer, 3 walls, 15% infill)
printed with no problems on a P!S on PETG, so I needed to change a few things in the slicer in order to make it not whine about differences.

I haven’t tried PETG yet for this model so it’s good to know it can be done well like this, good work 😀
