Description

Crater lake is Americas deepest, at 1949 ft. of water filling a crater that is 2148 feet deep. This national park in Oregon is frequently visited by tourists and hikers. Being an extinct volcanic caldera there are several features that lie beneath the depths that I attempted to capture with this scale 3d model.

I combined publicly available 10m Digital Elevation model and Bathymetry data from USGS online sources. I used 2x vertical exaggeration to highlight the features of this natural wonder. It is exported at 1 inch = 1 mile, but may be slightly less depending on what size you decide to print. I colored it with a very simple 4- color pattern, using blue for the water, brown for the surrounding dry landscape and green for the sparse vegetation. Also I put the nearby Mount Scott in white imagining if it was a bit snowy at the mountain summit.

Some features you can observe below the waterline include: The central dome and platform (volcanic structures), and toward the north the Merriam cone, another previous volcanic structure. Wizard island is peeking above the waterline surface.

For added effect, I have filled my test model with Resin to show the possibilities for a print such as this. Please print experiment and enjoy!
