I've had chickens for years and years, and I hate the chick feeders that go into the brooder. The store purchased ones are too light weight and they have perches for the chicks to sit on and poo into their food.
My version is heavy enough that it's not too easily tipped over. It has spikes and slanted supports to keep chicks from roosting on them. It also has a small roosting bar so if you use the included lift as the chicks grow, they can perch nicely and eat.
The spikes are pretty sharp. I haven't seen a chick even try to get up there. I think they see it and know they can't roost there. However, it'd be easy enough to file them down so they aren't so pokey.
