Description

Every mic-stand thread, finally sorted

If you run audio and camera gear out of the same kit, you hit the thread-standard wall constantly. A US 5/8"-27 mic clip won't sit on a European 3/8" boom, and neither one threads onto a 1/4"-20 camera arm or magic arm. I got tired of losing a session to a brass adapter that had walked off, so this set covers all six cross-combinations in one download.

Each adapter is a female socket on one end and a male stud on the other, with a knurled band in the middle sized to hand-tighten. They print standing up, no supports, no hardware — drop them on the plate and go.

The six adapters

  • 5/8" F → 3/8" M — put a US mic clip on a European boom.
  • 3/8" F → 5/8" M — the reverse: EU stand to US clip.
  • 5/8" F → 1/4" M — mic clip onto a camera or light stand.
  • 1/4" F → 5/8" M — a 1/4"-20 accessory onto a mic stand.
  • 3/8" F → 1/4" M — boom arm to a 1/4"-20 fitting.
  • 1/4" F → 3/8" M — a 1/4"-20 accessory onto a 3/8" thread.

Naming is F<female>-M<male>: the socket takes the male of that size, the stud threads into a female of its size.

The three standards it bridges

  • 5/8"-27 UNS — US microphone stands, clips, shockmounts.
  • 3/8"-16 — EU mic stands, boom arms, light stands.
  • 1/4"-20 UNC — cameras, tripods, accessory and magic arms.

Printing

  • No supports. The threads and knurl spiral around the vertical build axis and the socket ceiling closes itself with a 45° cone — anything the slicer flags is a false positive.
  • Orientation: exactly as the file sits — socket mouth flat on the bed, male stud pointing up. Don't re-orient.
  • 0.20 mm layers is fine; drop to 0.16 mm for crisper threads on the fine 5/8"-27. 4 walls, 40% infill — 100% is fine too, the parts are only 2–6 cm³. A 3–5 mm brim holds the thin socket-end first layer down.
  • PLA is crisp and fine for indoor work and light mics; go PETG for anything load-bearing or a hot venue — it won't creep under sustained load or soften in a hot car.
  • Each part is about 15–40 min and 2–7 g of filament.

One tip on fit

The threads are cut for a calibrated printer running PLA onto metal hardware. Thread fit is printer-dependent, so print one adapter and try it on your actual gear before you run all six — a printer that comes out a little tight or loose will show it on the first part, and it's easier to sort out there than across the whole set.
