Description

Parametric Drill Bit Box

This is a fully parametric drill bit storage box designed for easy organization, secure closing, and convenient access to drill bits during work.

The main body is printed as a single part with an integrated print-in-place hinge, laid flat during printing. The box also features five magnet slots for closing, helping to keep it securely shut.

Inside the box, there is a movable drill holder that can rotate from a flat storage position to an upright working position, making drill selection much easier and more comfortable while working.

The drill holder also includes magnets on the bottom side for improved drill retention.

For smoother operation and reduced wear of the moving plastic parts, I recommend applying a small amount of plastic-safe grease to the drill holder movement mechanism.

Assembly

The guide part for the drill holder mechanism is designed as a press-fit assembly.

Assembly order:

  1. Install the lower guide part first.
  2. Place the drill holder onto it.
  3. Install the upper guide part to close and secure the whole mechanism.

Depending on your printer’s accuracy, material, and calibration, light sanding may be required for proper fit and smooth movement. In my case, no sanding was necessary.

Editable Parameters (recommended range)

You can put values outside recommended range, but the outcome may be a broken part.

Main dimensions

  • Width: 80–180 mm
  • Length: 180–250 mm
  • Hinge Number: 2–4

Magnets

  • Box Magnet Diameter: 3–7.2 mm
  • Box Magnet Depth: 1–5.5 mm
  • Holder Magnet Diameter: 3–6.1 mm
  • Holder Magnet Depth: 1–4.1 mm

Handle

  • Handle Length: 15–50 mm
  • Handle Width: 4–20 mm
  • Handle Thickness: 2–10 mm

Drill holder geometry

  • Lower Row Depth: 12–16 mm
  • Upper Row Depth: 16–24 mm
  • Lower Row Height: 25–50 mm
  • Upper Row Height: 38–70 mm

Number of drill holes

  • Lower Row Drills: 6–11
  • Upper Row Drills: 4–6

Drill hole settings

  • Drill Hole Tolerance: 0–1 mm

Drill diameters

  • Drill 1–8: 0–12 mm
  • Drill 9–12: 0–20 mm
  • AddDrillLower 1–3: 0–12 mm
  • AddDrillUpper 4–5: 0–20 mm

Very Important Parameter Setup

IMPORTANT!!!

The following parameters must match exactly between the drill holder, the box body, and the guide part of the drill holder movement mechanism:

  • Width
  • LowerRowDepth
  • UpperRowDepth

Setup order:

  1. First, set these parameters in the drill holder.
  2. Then enter the same values in the box body.
  3. Finally, enter the same values in the guide part.

If these values do not match, the moving drill holder mechanism may not fit or work correctly.

If you print this model, I recommend checking the fit of the moving parts before final final assembly, especially if your printer tends to print slightly oversized or undersized parts.

Printing Recommendations

Box (Main Body)

  • Print using a lower layer height for better surface smoothness and improved hinge quality.
  • Print the box flat on the build plate as shown in the images.
  • No supports are required.

Drill Holder

  • Seam position: Aligned (for better appearance and cleaner edges).
  • Wall printing order: Outer walls first, then inner walls.
This improves the accuracy of the drill holes, but may slightly reduce the external surface quality.
  • Supports: Use only for critical areas.
Avoid enabling automatic supports everywhere, as they may generate supports inside the magnet holes.

Movement Mechanism (Guide Parts)

  • Seam position: Back side.
This improves the fit and alignment of the moving mechanism.
  • Print orientation: Place the parts exactly as in the original file.
  • Correct orientation is important for proper movement and assembly accuracy.
