Description

Introducing Marble Racer, a little car that trades ordinary wheels for glass marbles and rolls in any direction you push it. Each black wheel cradles a marble that lets the body glide sideways, spin in place, and drift on the diagonal, the way a fixed wheel never could. A printed driver rides in the seat, held by a hidden magnet, ready for the next journey across your desk.

Design & Concept

I designed Marble Racer as a gift for my nephew, then made him part of the toy itself. The four marbles sit inside printed black wheels and act as omnidirectional rollers, so the car moves freely instead of tracking a single line. The driver is a small printed figure, and a magnet under the seat lets him snap into place with a satisfying click. I sculpted both the car and the driver, then printed the whole thing in full color so every panel arrives ready to play.

Key Features:

  • Omnidirectional Roll: Glass marbles replace traditional wheels, letting the car glide sideways, spin, and drift in any direction.
  • Magnetic Driver: A printed driver figure snaps into the seat with a hidden magnet for a satisfying click.
  • Full-Color Print: Built for a multicolor workflow, so the body, wheels, and driver arrive fully colored with no painting required.
  • Playful Engineering: A functional toy that turns a simple push into a satisfying, unpredictable roll.

Hardware Required:

  • Marbles: 4x glass marbles, press-fit into the printed wheels as the rolling element.
  • Magnets 10x2: 2x magnets, one seated in the car, one under the driver.
  • Superglue: A small drop secures each magnet in its slot.

Printing Recommendations:

Infill: 15%

Infill Pattern: Gyroid

Assembly

  1. Print the car body, the four black wheels, and the driver figure.
  2. Press a glass marble into each black wheel until it seats and rolls freely.
  3. Glue one magnet into the car seat and one under the driver, matching their polarity so they attract.
  4. Snap the driver into the seat and send the car rolling in any direction.
  5. Glue the wheels to the machine's structure.
