Description

TwistCore — 32-Piece Sliding Fidget Ball

TwistCore is a print-in-place fidget made from 32 curved sections that move along a twisting internal guide. The mechanism is built to keep each section captured while allowing controlled movement around the rounded body.

Design Story

This project began as a challenge to create my own version of a sliding fidget from scratch.

The first design used 20 sections. After receiving feedback asking for a higher piece count, I tested several new versions and adjusted the spacing, clearances, wall thickness, and internal rail.

A 35-piece version was also tested, but the smaller sections did not hold onto the guide as reliably as I wanted. After more redesigning, 32 pieces gave the best balance of movement, strength, size, and printability.

The final version uses a mostly concealed guide and catcher system so the outside stays clean while the mechanism remains secure.

Features

  • 32 moving sections
  • Twisting sliding motion
  • Internal guide and catcher system
  • Print-in-place construction
  • Designed for FDM printers
  • No supports required
  • Refined clearances to reduce fusing
  • Rounded outer profile

Printing Notes

This model uses small moving gaps, so printer calibration is important. Avoid an overly compressed first layer, since excess elephant foot may join the sections together.

Recommended Settings

  • 0.16 mm layer height for the first print
  • 0.12 mm layer height for finer surface detail
  • Supports off
  • Brim off
  • Arachne wall generator recommended
  • PLA or PLA+ recommended
  • Check the sliced Preview to confirm that the moving gaps remain open

TwistCore went through multiple prototypes, failed ideas, and geometry changes before reaching this version. It is the most complete and reliable design I have made from this concept so far.
