Description

I love the Rugged Box, but sometimes I need a quicker (and less solid) solution. So I designed this box as quick alternative. It uses something like a piano hinge.

Due to the print-in-place construction this model the bottom part of the box and the lid have the same size. So I also designed another box without that limitation where the bottom part and lid are printed in separate parts and have to be connected with a piece of filament.

You need Autodesk Fusion 360 to set the parameters. It's free for private use.

I recommend to print the little testBox_PnP (with a .4 nozzle) to see if tolerances and nozzle width work for you (see print instructions below). It's only about 10g of filament. If it doesn't work you can edit the parameters “tolerance” and “nozzle”.

Customization

For those who are not familiar with Fusion here are very detailed instructions (see also the uploaded screenshots):

Open Parametric Box PnP.f3d in Fusion 360.

  1. Click Modify …
  2. … and Change Parameters
  3. In the following dialog you can edit the parameters. If the recalculation of the model fails just use the old value. Probably some other values need to be decreased (e.g. radius or hinge angle). Please use only reasonable values.
  4. Click File
  5. … and 3D Print
  6. In the following dialog click on Select
  7. … and chose the top item in the browser on the left ("Parametric Box PnP") !!!
  8. Refinement should be high.
Click OK and select a destination to export your box.

Hints:

  • I made a lot of tests with the tolerance. 0.2mm worked perfect. But you can increase it if the result is too hard to open and close.
  • The inner height is the sum of both parts (bottom and top)!
  • By default all corner radiuses are equal. You can edit each one of them if you scroll down.

Print Instructions

  • 3 walls
  • Arachne Mode (or at least “detect thin walls”) !
  • no support
  • Bigger boxes need a brim!

PLA with .2mm layer height normally works fine. Also tested with ASA and PETG which are better for very small boxes. PC also worked great.

Assembly

No assembly required. Just open and close the box a few times.

Notes

If you have any hints or suggestions please let me know.

I would love to see photos of your makes …

hi, love your box, but i'm having a lot of issues with importing into tinkercad after creating an stl OR obj in fusion 360. The hinges seem to become messed up after import and i'm not sure what is going on. Have you seen this? any tips? thanks.

i had to reduce the complexity of the exported stl using meshmixer to solve this problem. Still no idea why.

Came out perfect. I couldn't find a place to alter the size of circle on the front though, not that it matters to me.

Super easy to be printed! It worked at first run. First time hinge is a little bit hard to move, but after a few turns it gets much better. Only small concern is that "button" to unlock is a little bit too hard (but the befit is that box is super sturdy)

Excellent Box. Thank you for sharing this. It helped me make a bunch of little organizational boxes for my shop. It was also very instructive to me personally on how you did the parametric stuff. I want to learn how to do this and you have helped me understand. 2x the thanks!
