Description

Want a chess set so small that it can fit in your pocket and still looks like a conventional chess set without feeling like playing a game of Operation? Weirdly specific desire, but I'm glad to see we think alike.

This chess set is 166 x 86 x 24 mm in size when folded (approx. 6.5 x 3.4 x 1 in.). The model also comes with custom chess pieces and allows for multicolor objects without the need of an AMS or glue/fastener and a snap lock to keep the board in the closed and open positions.

For the chess board print profiles, there are four variants; a chess ‘box’ and chess ‘case’ variant, each with AMS and non-AMS variants. The ‘box’ variant prints faster and can be quickly cleaned up after a game, whereas the ‘case’ variant keeps the pieces neatly organized and visually presentable. Pick whichever one tickles your fancy. Also feel free to experiment with different top and bottom surface patterns!

This chess set comes with spaces to insert magnets, but this feature is optional. If chosen, it will require 96 5x2 mm cylindrical magnets. If not inserting magnets, the spaces can be ignored. Further, you can remove the pauses and negative parts in the slicer that serve as the spaces to put the magnets if so desired. The size of the negative parts in the slicer can even be adapted to fit different sized magnets.

Features

✅ Snap band that keeps the chessboard closed

✅ Storage for snap band in the board that also prevents the chessboard from folding when playing

✅ Storage for chess pieces inside the board for travel

✅ Optional space for magnets

✅ No AMS Required

✅ No Glue/Post-Processing Required

Printing/Customization

For non-AMS variants of the chessboard, half of the tiles will match the color of the board, while the other half are up to your discretion. For the AMS variants of the chessboard, both tiles colors are independently addressable and there is an included tile trim, allowing for a colored trim around the tiles, as shown below. If a trim is not desired, in the slicer go to Objects and scroll to find ‘mod_chess_mini_tile_trim.stl’ (circled in red below) and delete it.

If printing a non-AMS version, note that you must print the ‘Tiles’ plate first, as the chess board will pause at a specific height to allow the insertion of the tiles. For all versions there will be a pause where you can insert the optional magnets. If inserting magnets, make sure all are oriented north-side facing up.

As well, pick one of the print profiles for the chess pieces. Note that if printing a non-AMS variant, the first and third pause that occurs is to assist in swapping the color manually to achieve the multicolor effect without the need of an AMS. For all variants there will be a pause where you can insert the optional magnets. If inserting magnets, make sure all are oriented north-side facing down.

How to Use

The snap lock is snapped onto the front of the chess board when closed, as shown below. To remove the snap lock, simply pull the lock at one end away from the board.

When the board is open, slide the snap lock through the hole present on the front of the board until it is flush with the board, as shown below. This stores the snap lock during play and serves to prevent the board from folding during play. When done, push the snap lock as far as you can, and grab ahold of the other end and pull it out.
