Description
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was a heavy bomber four-engine propeller-driven aircraft primarily used by the United States in the latter part of World War II and the Korean War; it remained in service in various roles throughout the 1950s. The Royal Air Force used the B-29 under the designation Washington, and the Soviet Union built an unlicensed copy under the name of Tupolev Tu-4. The nickname Superfortress derives from its well-known predecessor, the B-17 Flying Fortress. The design of the B-29 led to a series of bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, trainers, and tanker aircraft manufactured by Boeing, including the updated B-50 Superfortress variant. Subsequently, it would be replaced by the jet models B-47 Stratojet and B-52 Stratofortress.
