Description
I wanted a coaster set that actually looked and felt like a high-end, machined product for my desk, rather than a typical 3D print.
This is a heavy, monolithic coaster display stand with four matching coasters. The whole system is designed to be printed in PETG-CF for that matte, speckled finish, and it utilizes custom 85A TPU "mushroom plugs" for the feet. The TPU feet are a friction-fit—just push them into the recessed holes on the bottom of the coasters and the stand. No glue required, and they give the coasters a premium "shadow gap" while protecting your desk.
The Secret Sauce (Print Settings): The included print profile is highly tuned to hide layer lines and create a flawless, molded look. If you are slicing this yourself, here is exactly how I dialed it in:
- The Bottom Layer (The CF Texture): To get that holographic weave effect on the top of the coasters (which print upside down), you need a textured PEI plate. I rotated the bottom surface pattern so the lines perfectly align with the plate's texture. I also went with thick initial lines and a slow 40 mm/s initial layer speed to perfectly press the CF material into the plate's crevices.
- The Top Surface (No Ironing!): Ironing usually ruins the matte look of carbon fiber filaments, making them look smeared. Instead, I skipped ironing entirely. The trick is to use 6 top shell layers, bump the Top Surface Flow Ratio up to 1.06, and drop the Top Surface speed to a painfully slow 10 mm/s. It takes a little longer, but the plastic pools perfectly and creates an incredibly smooth, solid top finish.
- The Structure: I used 3 Wall Loops and 30% Cubic infill. This gives the set a really satisfying, heavy weight in the hand without risking the warping that comes from printing 100% solid blocks of PETG.
Assembly:
- Print the PETG-CF plate (Coasters + Stand). ZERO supports needed.
- Print the TPU plate (16 little feet).
- Press the feet into the 6mm holes on the bottom of the coasters and the four corners of the stand.
