Threshold – A Quiet Architectural Book Nook

Threshold is a minimalist book nook designed to evoke quiet curiosity through depth, shadow and warm light. I wanted to create a feeling of intrigue as you look into this nook and see the light shining from the back, almost as if inviting you to come up the stairs to see what’s back there. I went with a minimalist design hoping to let shape, form and shadow be the primary design details. 

Some key design details I used are; Forced perspective with each step being slightly lower and deeper than the section in front of it, A monolithic, ancient-inspired archway design that is almost architectural, and a subtle warm lighting shining down from the top of the rear light veil. 

Threshold can be printed without support. Its split into three sections to avoid the need to reprint the entire thing should something go wrong during the print. Because of the size, I printed it with painted corner brings on the larger parts, just to help prevent warping. I also printed it face down, so that the layer lines would be running top-to-bottom, which lends itself well to the overall design intent. For the Front I printed it with Monotonic lines running straight up and down, again to help support the overall design intent. The front portion slides onto a printed tenon in the middle section, whereas the back section is connected with magnets – to avoid the need for unnecessary supports. The rear light veil has an oval cavity in the bottom of it, to save some print time and filament. 

For the light, I used the Y-Shape LED light w/ Magnetic control from Maker’s Supply. HERE is a link to it. I used the warm white version.
