Description

The Twist Close Octagonal Box, a captivating 3D-printed origami design by Camilo Cortes on Fusion 360, combines the elegance of origami with the practicality of a 3D printed self-closing container. Let’s delve into its intriguing features:

Design and Concept:

  • The Twist Close Octagonal Box is an origami-inspired creation that seamlessly blends artistry and functionality.
  • Its octagonal shape adds a touch of uniqueness, making it stand out from traditional square or rectangular boxes.
  • The design incorporates a twisting mechanism that allows the box to close securely without the need for additional fasteners.
  • This origami pattern was designed by hand on FUSION 360 (I'm new on this software, be kind with me hahaha)

Self-Closing Mechanism:

  • Unlike conventional boxes that require clasps, tape, or other closures, this origami box employs a clever self-closing technique.
  • When you twist the box, its sides interlock, ensuring that the contents remain safe and hidden.
  • The simplicity of this mechanism is both elegant and efficient.
  • You can open and close this box multiple times, thanks to the OCTAGRAM SPIRAL buttom surface  pattern, this avoid breaks on the thin foldable parts.

3D Printing:

  • Thanks to 3D printing technology i can bring this design to life on a more easy form.
  • The precision and versatility of 3D printing allow for intricate geometries and smooth surfaces.
  • The material used for printing can vary, but lightweight and durable options work best for this type of origami-inspired creation.

Applications:

  • The Twist Close Octagonal Box has a multitude of potential uses:
    • Gift Packaging: Imagine presenting a small gift or trinket in this beautifully crafted box.
    • Storage: Use it to store jewelry, small accessories, or keepsakes.
    • Decorative Piece: Even when empty, the box serves as an eye-catching decorative item.

When 3D printing, follow these recommendations for optimal results:

Layer Height: Set the layer height to 0.2 mm. This value determines the thickness of each printed layer. Smaller layer heights result in finer details but longer print times.

First Layer Height: For the initial layer, use a height of 0.18 mm. A slightly thinner first layer ensures better adhesion to the print bed and smoother surfaces.

Z Scale (Layer Height Adjustment):

  • For large-size prints (100% scale), keep the Z scale at 0.80 mm. This ensures consistent layer height throughout the print.
  • However, if you’re scaling down the model (less than 70% scale), verify that the Z size remains at 0.80 mm or a maximum of two layers. Adjust as needed to maintain proper layer adhesion.
  • REMEMBER CHANGE THE BUTTOM SURFACE PATTERN TO OCTAGRAM SPIRAL!

REMEMBER to calibrate your printer and perform test prints to fine-tune these settings based on your specific 3D printer and filament. Happy printing! 🖨🔧🌟

This is beautiful! I printed it with 3-color PLA silk and it came out great!
