Monument in Kyiv
When in 1981 they inaugurated "the Motherland", a statue of over one hundred meters in height in Kyiv, the aim was to remember the Soviet war effort against Nazi Germany during the Second World War. It was the symbol of the unity of the USSR towards the common enemy. It's been a while since then. In 1991 Ukraine obtained independence and on 4 February 2022, probably fearing the war that is underway today, the Motherland lights up in yellow and blue. Patriotism. Yes, the symbolic statue of the Ukrainian capital has changed its meaning. From being a symbol of the Soviet fight against Nazism, today it tells a very different story: Kiev's resistance to the Russian siege.
