Here is the A1 faceplate extruder mod which shows the Piranha Plant going in and out of a Pipe from Super Mario!

The bottom tabs snap off when I try to put on the cover

Try to push the gear in straight. Also - be sure you are putting like-gears opposite with each other. If you have two similar looking gears next to each other, they will not fit together. Look closely at the assembled photo of the design - not all the gears are the same! Good luck!!
