Description

AWESOME Mars Lithophane Lamp. Really happy with how it came out. A Mercator projection of the Martian map was used as basis for the lamp at https://lithophanemaker.com/

The rock base is a highly modified remix of the following model: https://www.printables.com/model/578900-flat-rock-for-terrain-or-base

I created the socket holder around this inexpensive 2-pack socket that came with the perfect color orange light bulb: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJTJBHJL?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

When printing the lithophane lamp, make sure to set the number of walls to 6+ to ensure the whole model is walls with zero infill. Per ususal, the lower the layer height the better quality, especially at the top of the model. I recommend printing with a 0.4 nozzle and MAX 0.20mm layer height, but preferably smaller. Pro tip, use the variable layer height tool to set the top 15mm or so the the smallest layer height possible to get a great looking top.

For the socket holder, I printed mine in PETG since I didn't know how warm the light bulb would get and didn't want PLA to get soft. It also requires a small amount of support in the center of the cone when printing.

For assembly, simply slide the Amazon socket into the socket holder (without the light bulb screwed in) and screw the light bulb in once the socket is fully seated inside the holder. Then run the cord plug through the center of the rock base (down from the top of the base) and seat the base of the socket holder into the rock base. It should be a snug fit. Run the cord through the channel in the base to let the base sit flat. Then just slide the lithophane lamp over the bulb and socket holder until it's resting on the base.
